So I've had a PS2 for years and own a PSP. I've been planning on getting a PS3 sometime in the next few months. I know that Sony has built in and continues to add tie-in functionality between their portable and the new console...and my regular PSP updates show the LocationFree and Remote Play icons are there, waiting to be used.

So, I'm wondering, anybody out there taking advantage of said functionality--and what are your opinions/observations of the combo uses of the PSP and the PS3. This is one aspect that Sony can play to the hilt that the competition can't seem to touch...the PSP is a media machine as well as a gaming unit, just like the PS3, and there are LOTs of possibilities here that I find exciting. Unfortunately--this gets next to ZERO press.

So, what do you all think?

I have both PS3 and PSP, but since there really is no current game cross support between the two, I haven't really bothered yet. Sony keeps promising that support but so far it has happened. One article I read from Sony said that it's basically up to the developers to take advantage of it. I do have some movies on my PSP that I could sync to the PS3, but I'm sure it would look terrible on my 42" LCD.

Have you tried the LocationFree functionality to stream videos/music the other way, that is, FROM the PS3 to the PSP?

Not yet, my PSP memory stick is pretty full right now anyway. Most downloaded video I have right now is HD movie trailers. Will let you know though when I try out some SD content.

With the LocationFree system, can't you wirelessly stream content that sits on your PS3? In other words, not doing a transfer of the media, but remote viewing? That's the kind of functionality that LF purports (as a competitor to Slingbox and others). True the PS3 doesn't have a tuner, but with downloaded trailers, music videos, movies and the like...

Yes, I have done it. The psp takes control of the ps3 with location free. You can even surf the net on ps3 with psp and everything is stream to the psp screen. At first sony said you have to have the 60gig version for the feature. But I have a 20gig ps3 and it works well.

I guess if that is the case, I don't see what the real big use is for it. Why stream a movie to a small PSP screen when you can just watch in front of you on a bigger TV via PS3. I can guess that's the overall answer to your question, why there isn't much talk about this functionality. It doesn't really seem to be a huge benefit, maybe something you can play around with now and then and say, "Cool" but overall, not a big deal. Just my two cents.

Just a 'for instances' (I have a couple of Slingboxes that come in handy in these sorts of scenarios), say you're out on the back porch grilling some chops and you want to watch something. Or in the kitchen, etc. Or, er, say you're spending some quality time on the throne... Hey, maybe that's why nobody's talking about this feature--they just don't want to talk about how/where their using it ;).

(BTW, I've never watched anything while on the throne...laptops too big. But the PSP, now that'd be handy :D).

Hey, never thought of that. This could now be the greatest invention since sliced bread.:D

I have a PSP ? For some experienced users. I am looking into purchaseing one and in my research I have become curious about the media organizer software that is available. The software says you can "rip" DVD movies to your PSP. So can I rip say spiderman to the memory stick and watch it? Meaning does it compress it some how to be able to get the whole thing on there? I know there is this whole issue with the PSP DVD format etc.. UMD or something like that. Anyways, can someone clear me up on this?
