So it's either proof we're not alone, or crackpot science.

It will be interesting to see what the scientific community has to say on this. Interpretations of fossilized remains of microscopic organisms are always controversial. (If you go through a lot of rice grains, you are likely to find one or two that look like Virgin Mary or Jay Leno.) 
Just keep in mind that the picture shown in the article quoted above is an image of a real bacteria (giant bacterium Titanospirillum velox), not from a meteorite! It was included by Dr. Hoover in his publication for comparison purposes.

I would not say that this is proof but I would say it might be intersting to follow.
