Program Guide Episode Numbers

I wonder why the episode numbers are so random on the program guide? Not expecting a solution - I just download an episode guide from elsewhere and watch series based on title, but it seems strange that the episode numbers on the program guide don't work.

Never made any sense at least in the last 10 years.

Sometimes episodes are listed by their serial number like 101 for year one episode one and sometlmes they are listed by season and episode, no consistence at all and hard to decipher in the recordings listing.
