Problems with 211k with external hard drive

After years, I finally ponyed up and paid to enable my bedroom's 211k as a DVR. I'll try to explain my issue, and maybe some of you SatGuys can steer me in the right direction.
I suspect that the WD My Book 1T drive is not working properly. I inherited it from a family member, so I thought I'd give it a try.
  1. After Dish activated my account, it took over an hour for the 211k to format it.
  2. When I hit pause, the counter only registers about every 12 to 15 seconds.
  3. When I unpause, the screen freezes, jumps a few seconds, freezes again, and eventually makes it back to live TV. I can't watch ANY paused content. I haven't even tried to record anything.
  4. I did swap out USB cables, just to rule out that possibility.
So...any ideas?
My BIG question is; if the drive is bad, what would you guys replace it with? IOW, what brands are most compatible with Dish STB's? I use a WD My Book with my 722, and it works great.
THANKS :)

The WD mybook 1tb is probably your best bet. Just make sure it is self powered, and single disk drive also make sure usb2.0.

Any usb 2.0 drive will work. I have a WD 500gb that is the original drive I've used for several years on 1 of my 211k's and I have a 1 TB WD on the other 211k.

The original 500gb WD I'm using is starting to get noisy and I will probably have to replace it soon.

The 722 formatted in 25 minutes. I am trying to transfer a 45 minute program to no avail. The progress bar started at a 5 minute transfer. It's now fluctuating between 18 and 26 minutes. The green bar is actually going backwards! :YIKES

This I pulled off another forum website. Hope it helps.

Other then different bundled software, the Essential has a Illuminated capacity gauge - See at a glance how much space is available on your drive, and the Elite has a Smart display - Create your own personalized drive label to remind you of what's stored on each drive. You can even view the label when the drive is unplugged. The display also includes available capacity and security status.

The speed will be the same on all 3 drives because it's USB 2.0 (480Mbps Max)

The illuminated capacity gauge only works in conjunction with the software to drive it installed on a PC. I have that one on my 722 and nothing illuminates that way.

I ended up ordering the Elite. It'll be here tomorrow. Both the Elite and Essential were recertified/refurbs for 59.99. I chose the Elite because it had a month longer on the warranty.

Found 2 DVR 721 receivers in my closet..what to do ?
