Not a bad guess for NY, but as much as it pains me to say it, the Rangers are further down this list than #3. Here is my take, which is a more historical take since certain teams like St. John's are right now a blip on the radar screen, when they're good fans rock the Garden.

There is no way that the Sox are not the clear big dogs in all of NE. the bruins were the tradtioanl seconb but the Pats might be there now---but if they had two losing seasons they would move down the list.
Well, you can throw in your perspective about other areas !
As for your area, the Huskies would be the TOP team, but also the bottom team !

I don't know how old you are, but I will say that under 40, Patriots are #1 and over 40 Sox are #1.

I have to be skeptical about a NESN poll that has the Red Sox #1 and the Bruins #2 when, last I knew, NESN was owned by the Red Sox and the Bruins.
I lived in New England for over 40 years, and the Bruins fan base was the most loyal but least elastic. They would draw 13,909 every game, whether in first place or last, and if you had a UHF paraboloc antenna on a distant bar, you could draw a few tables full of fans for every game that WSBK(?) carried, but come playoff time, that draw did not substantially increase.
I think Charles Barkley called the Celtics fair weather fans and he was right. During the Sidney Wicks era, I used to drive to Boston about once very two weeks, buy a couple of $3 tickets a couple hours before game time, go out and eat, and then have my choice of seats. I even sat in the press row once, when only four reporters attended the game. But when they signed Larry Bird, I arrived at the Garden three hours before the first day that tickets went on sale and was about 20th in line, but could only get lousy weekday seats for unimportant opponents, as the successful (and very white) Larry Bird Celtics sold out every game for nearly the next decade.
Now, I live in Washington, DC. Here is the complete ranking of all of the important, Washington, DC area sports teams.

I noticed people were posting College teams...I thought we were only discussing PRO teams in the major venues (Boston, New York, Detroit, etc.)?
I also noticed nobody was including womens professional sports teams like the WNBA?
That's ok. I realize in some areas of the country (especially the South) that collegiate sports are bigger than the pros. That's not the case in Boston, but I respect it's that way elsewhere.
I do, however, think that some of the posters are ignoring the "If every team in that particular city/region was championship caliber" criteria. That's the only way to get a true sense of a pecking order in a city. That's why I have Bruins #2 in Boston. The Bruins are currently the least successful team in Boston........by far. But I realize Boston is a hockey town, behind only being a baseball town.

You are absolutely, positively full of it, and you know it. I live closer to there than you do, so I am going to give a more qualified answer. Just listen to sports talk radio up there, and you will find where the interest lies:
1. Bengals
2. Reds
3. UC (basketball only)
4. Xavier
5. Kentucky basketball
Now I'm pretty much talking about passion level, not number of people who are fans of the team. Otherwise, the Reds would be on top.
The Reds are trying (and failing) to hang on to the tradition that Cincinnati is a baseball town. Sports talk show host and Cincinnati Enquirer columnist Paul Daugherty has said several times that the Bengals are more popular than the Reds in Cincinnati (over the airwaves of the Reds' flagship station), and he's right. This observation was also raised by a writer in Cincinnati Magazine two years ago (don't remember the name).
There is a passion elicited by the Bengals in fans, positive and negative, that the Reds just cannot match. You can go through a whole Reds season, and pretty much be able to expect a fairly even-keel response from their fans (one of which am I), whether they win or lose. The Reds are looked upon very positively, but they do not do well at the gate. However, if the Bengals are having a bad season, the level of ire seems to be raised (at least on the radio), until the fans realize that getting upset when Mike Brown is your owner is a waste of time. Similarly, when the Bengals are winning, the city is practically on fire.
All that said, outside of Cincinnati itself, the Bengals have not been able to get as much of a stronghold in the surrounding region. The Reds will probably always be more popular in places like Louisville and Columbus.
From afar this is how I would have guessed Chicago, with one exception, I would have thought the Cubs were #1 and Da Bears #2. But you lived there, Salsa, so you certainly know better than me.
I haven't been in Illinois during football season yet, but here in Central Illinois, I'd have to guess it woudl be the Cubs. Logos everywhere I look.
