Whats the differance and what does one do with a Pre amplifier and a amplifier?

If we're talking RF, then a pre amp is usually associated with an outdoor antenna and is used to amplify the signal to the tuner. An amplifier is used to distribute RF signals to multiple outlets (TVs).
