I4U News - Portable Blu-ray Super Multi Drive aimed at new Apple MacBooks

Amex Digital announces a stylish new portable Blu-ray Drive aimed at Apple MacBooks, but also works with Windows PCs.
The Amex Portable Blu-ray Super Multi Drive supports the Quiet Drive Technology reduces the noise level of audio and video playback while also delivering increased writing reliability.
Liquid Crystal Tilt/Blur Compensator plays and records to discs more reliable.
Dual/Double Layer recording provides nearly twice the capacity of a single layer recordable Blu-ray-R (25GB vs. 50GB).

The USB Blu-ray drive comes in black and white. Measurements of the Blu-ray recorder and player are 140 x 143 x 16 mm.
Suggested retail price is $269.00. More details on the AMEX Digital site.

Does it come with a spare battery?

Sicne BluRay drives suck up so much juice, you won't be able to watch a movie before it drains your laptop.....

Are there any software-based Blu-ray player applications for Mac OSX?

After doing a bit of searching it appears there are none currently. I guess Mac users would need to dual boot both Windows and OSX, and use Windows for Blu-ray movie playback since applications like PowerDVD are Windows-only.

I can only guess the folks in charge at Apple are trying force Mac users into viewing HD content on their computers via iTunes and AppleTV. The lack of Blu-ray support in applications like iMovie and Final Cut Studio opens a very obvious vulnerability rivals like Adobe can attack.

The CS3 and new CS4 versions of Adobe Production Studio feature Blu-ray authoring capability. Apple is already getting shoved aside in terms of professional/enterprise level BD authoring. All of the major turnkey systems used for creating retail Blu-ray movie discs run on the Windows platform (Sonic Scenarist, Sony Blu-print, Sony Blu-code and more). High end digital intermediate systems for film scanning and digital color correcting are typically Windows-based as well. I think this is going to turn into a serious image problem for Apple. I think Apple needs to do more to maintain its user base for professional creative workers. Right now Apple seems willing to let those important users slip away to Windows in favor of concentrating on the business of iTunes, iPods, iPhones and other consumer electronics gadgetry and software.
