Third-party App support for the Digital AV adapter is going to be annoying in the short term. I fired up the NCAA March Madness app to watch the live game and the audio went to the TV, but the video stayed on the iPhone. Of course, I get TruHD on the Dish, so it wasn't a big deal, but I have a feeling that video apps aren't going to support this dongle until it's been out for a while.

In a lighter note, I just found out today that one of our parent companies now has a corporate portal into the Apple store. We get a whole 2% discount off of iPads. The bad news is if I had known about the corporate deal Monday night, I would have saved $3 off the adapter.

Finally got to play with an ipad2 today - impressed by the weight reduction; much easier to hold in the hand than the original; still perhaps heavier than I think it should be, but I impressed. I can see why it is a success.

Managed to get the HDMI adapter today. It works great with my FPTV. All I had to do was connect it to my front HDMI aux in on my AVR.

This was tested with a first generation ipad.
I tested it on the following apps:
1. You Tube works well with great quality
2. Videos loaded to the ipad std, def.; BD ripped to ipad, and itunes downloaded video. All worked great with very good PQ on my 110" diag screen. Sound was great but all my videos were DD2.0. I'll need to render a DD5.1 video to test that sometime in the future.
3. Netflix. PQ was very good. HD Netflix looked almost 1080px1920. I was surprised as I didn't expect to see such high quality using this ipad system.
4. ESPN app. The sports videos played fine.
5. FoxNews videos all played fine using skyfire browser.
6. CNN News all videos played fine.
7. ABC app. Network TV shows did not play. I will try that on Skyfire later.
8. The photos slide show plays simultaneous on the ipad as well as the FPTV.
9. All podcasts play fine but some are fairly poor PQ while others like Leo LaPorte TWIT has excellent quality. GIGO applies here.

What I like about it is it just works or it doesn't work. When it worked it was technically flawless.

Don,
I'm still waffling on an iPad, so I have not tested the Digital AV adapter with one. I'm glad you went ahead and picked one up to try yourself. I'm just as happy with using my Apple TV for displaying media from my iPhone 4 (and no wires!)

Mike,
I'm glad you tried one out and liked it. I would get one if I didn't already have the iPhone. I don't want (or need) the overlap in devices.

More detail on the hdmi adapter-
On item #5, I verified that while Skyfire does play video from Foxnews website through the hdmi adapter, it does not for Flash video content. When the newsclip is in Flash, it plays on the ipad but is not sent to the TV via hdmi.

Only if my department will buy it for me. :) I still love my GTab. But I was impressed with the ipad2, much MORE so than the ipad 1 OR the fatPad. :)

I don't see a tablet as an overlap in devices with a smartphone; well, I do if you get suckered into buying a second data plan for it, but for wi-fi only, I think the tablet tends to replace the usage of the smartphone for a lot of light internet usage.

Of course, I am still sitting here writing on my laptop because it is still the fastest way to write, and it has the extra advantage of providing a nice heat source to keep me warm while working on my recliner. :)

Rocky you are starting to sound like someone who will only play a banjo and will never own a guitar.:D lol

The idea of a thinner, lighter, faster iPad excites me, but not enough to rush out and buy one and resell my original. Barring unforeseen circumstances, I'll wait for the third iteration (especially since it may be released for this holiday season- that sort of product cycle release makes much for sense than Spring releases). If the third one doesn't come out until next spring a year isn't that long of a wait...

Does the HDMI adapter work with the iPhone 4?
Yes it does, but I can't say if it does less on the iPhone 4 than on the iPad Prime. Don has had pretty good success with his on his iPad. I don't have all the same apps as he does, so I can't compare.

But playing your movies and videos from the iPhone 4 works, as does YouTube. However, I tried playing a trailer in the Fandango app and all I got was sound from the TV while the video played on the iPhone. Trailers on Apple's iTunes store do go to the Digital AV adapter.

I got the same thing playing flash content, Sound went to home theater speakers while video remained on the ipad. other non-flash video clips from the same website had everything appear on the home theater system.

Note- whenever the media gets sent to the display, it does not simultaneously display on the ipad. This is different for the ipad2 where the content appears on both simultaneously.

Don,
I'm curious. Have you noticed the Digital AV adapter getting warm (specifically, the part that plugs into the iPad) when you use it? On the iPhone, I was holding it by the adapter and it was warm to the touch. I wonder how much it drains the battery in use. And I think that's why Apple added the 30-pin slot, so you can plug it into the charger and not have your battery die during use.

For those that have a new iPad 2, do you also have the VGA adapter as well? I heard a rumor on MacBreak Weekly that the iPad 2 will mirror over that connection.

Who here has upgraded their iPad1 to iOS4.3? I have read what it changes. Is that an immediate "must have"...? (Seems like 4.2 had a lot more immediate value...)

I too was thinking the upgrade would be necessary in order to use the HDMI adapter. I think I'll take care of that over the weekend as a re-sync is overdue and I want to delete some things I can't dump on the 'Pad itself.

I haven't ordered the adapter yet, was hoping the local BB store would have it before long if they don't already. (Want to avoid the Apple store shipping charge; I expect my order to be less than $50 this time.)

We now have a Best Buy "Mobile" store opening in our local mall which is very close to where I work. Looks like they sell all the phones and related stuff, and per their website they'll also carry all the tablets and related as well. Anyone here have experience in one of those small specialty shops? I can't imagine there would be any difference vs. a full-sized BB other than inventory...

ok, ordered my iPad2 this morning. Now to find something else to do for the next five weeks.

I really hope it gets here before the next iOS release so I can save the 4.3 SHSH.
