Please someone tell me the real difference between Dishnet and Direct tv

I'm going to guess what you are asking. My answer is because both Fox and CBS will do all their games in HDTV that also means that D* will carry those HDTV games via their Sunday Ticket package. Remember that Fox and CBS broadcast these games in HDTV on their own and they just give their feed to D* for NFL Sunday Ticket customers.

1-I cant find anything on the guide, the channels are not grouped.

2-There are no favorites lists, with Dish you can have one for each person in the fam.

3- The tivo guide is the slowest in the world you wait all the time with the hour glass also, even with the software upgrade

4- there is no up down browsing in the full screen

5- there is no pic in the guide on tivo

6- there is no lease option, with Direct I do not have to buy a $700 HD Tivo, dish its $5 a month, plus the "setup fee" or down payment of $250

7- you cant lease a SD Tivo, Dish has a $5 a month lease which is less than cables $15 for a DVR lease.

8-There is NO home media solution yet, the Dish 522, 645, and 945 models all have 2nd remotes with dual tuners so you can watch live or recorded shows anywhere in the house.

9- Direct charges $5 extra per room, with Dish and the 522, 645, and 945 there is no extra charge for the 2nd room.

10- But most of all , I cant find anything on the Tivo Guide, the print is too small, and its not in order, they even slip shopping channels in between everything.

Rumor is that if you lease with Dish you will get free upgrades to Mpeg4 boxes.

I have my Tivo on Ebay right now for $50, I will be selling my HD Tivo for $400 in a few weeks.

I guess its all just person preference, I tried Direct, now Im going back.

But the one major thing to me about Dish was that they do not have the "Nfl sunday sports ticket", or the "NFL network"....As far as rooms i only have one tv so i won't have to worry about 2 receivers.

Had E* went to D*...The present HD receivers with E* were the reason I switched...They don't work well at all. + I love Tivo...The only complaint I have with D* is their channels aren't grouped that well.

Thats what i heard about the channel line ups weren't grouped very well.... I am actually hoping Voom does not close out at the end of the month. I really am happy with the HD channels and my NFL network channel at least, besides being able to get all my locals perfectly. My only fear is switching services and then not being able to receive my locals. But, if i don't have a choice, i'll have to go with Direct TV. I'm just not getting a good feeling about Dishnet. Thank you all for being very nice and answering my questions. Who knows maybe i'll get Direct tv also just for the NFL sunday ticket

I don't think you can order just the NFL ST anymore. I think you have to carry a minimum subscription package.

a response to your list:

1 the channels are grouped properly , you are used to dishs groupings, thats all.
2. i have a phillips tivo dsr 700 , it has favorite lists and wish lists and watch lists
3 mine isnt slow at all, and it works all the time and i have never had to reboot in 4.5 months

7 why would any one lease a sd tivo when you can get one for 49 dollars ? that makes no sense
8 home media and uhf remotes interest maybe 5% of the viewers
9 granted, but when the one ird goes bad you have nothing to watch at all, at least with two irds you can watch one of the other goes bad
10 read your guide options, you can make the grid show fewer at a time ant with fewer, they are bigger

rumor has it directv will be replacing all hd boxes when the switch to mpeg4 on HD becomes effective

the tivo is only worth 49 who would buy it for 50?

you MAY get 400 for the hd tivo

the big selling point to texasgal is the nfl ticket and dish and cable dont even have a prayer of even BIDDING on it until 2011, that was the best move directv ever made!

yeah but when it comes to HD just remember..

3 games a week you lose to SD local channels if your local channels are not yet provided in HD with the new satellites coming.

Or even worse if your locals are not being provided at all on D* you lose them completely...

So far iam lucky to receive my locals in HD and fox HD...Right now i have alot of concerns about satellite in general like when my trees start blooming i may lose my signal all together. As far as locals from Direct tv, if iam able to receive my locals with Voom with no problems, isn't there a greater chance i would be able to receive mine with D* also???....Their available in my area. That is a scarry thought because who would want to pay $1000 for equiptment and not even receive your locals.

If all he cared about was money they would never have purchased ST. They lose millions of dollars on ST every year.

Depends on what you watch...

If your into NFL (and will pay for ST) D* is the way to go (especially if your into HD).

But if your into the NBA (and HD) then E* is the way to go (I think D* Not having TNT-HD is ridiculous)

As stated elsewhere E* also has monthly porn.

Both have a large selection of religious and shopping channels (sarcasm)

If your not into either, then there really is no signiificant difference (yes you could probably spend a few hours analyzing the different packages between the two providers to save $4-5/ month based upon YOUR viewing preferences but I don't rate that as significant)

I have Dish and D*, and I like both in different ways. Here in East Texas, D* has more locals then Dish ( WB and UPN). I like the packaging better with D*. And I love Season Pass on my Tivo.

I have the 921 with Dish, and prefer it over Tivo's slowness. But if D* would offer a good deal on the HD Tivo, I'd probably drop Dish since the programming with D* is better for my budget.

One suggestion. SHould Voom go dark, Dish has a no commitment promo for new customers, (no one year committment) and with DHA, (lease program) you can get a HD receiver (811, not a DVR) for free.

D* requires a one year contract, and IMHO, you pay way too much for the specialty receivers. Just my thoughts.

Again, both companies are great, and you can't make a mistake with ordering either one.

Each service has it's fans and detractors, but when you get right down to it, I think the answer is "not much". Oh, there are some technical and programming differences, that's for sure, but overall I think both provide an excellent product at a fair price. I've had DirecTV for over five years and my neighbor has Dish and when I go to his house the picture looks as good as mine. We're both are happy and neither of us wants to switch.For somebody just getting into it,I think the choice really comes down to who offers the programming and equipment you want at the price you want to pay.
