Got one this past week.Really nice for entry level.Still reading the pdf owners manual to learn all the bells and whistles.

What exactly is the surround back/height hookup for?

Surround backs and heights are used in 7 or nine speaker setups (not couning the sub). In a 7 speaker setup you can use heights or backs. In a 9 you use both. The 522 is 5.1 so I don't think those connections are available. Let us now whatyou think after you get everythin going.

Thats what I thought.Although, still a little fuzzy...I upgraded from a pioneer sx 315 5.1.I am using the speakers from it with the 522 for now.I have the surround speakers (rear) of where I sit connected to the surround output of the 522.Would there be any difference or use to connect them to the pre out surround back ports? That would also present another problem as they are wire only not rca plug.

Definitely a step up from the Sx 315.The sound is awesome!Having the ability to connect all the hdmi components to it is a huge plus.Used the Mcacc to calibrate the speakers and it did a very nice job. There is one small caveat, the roku works fine with anything that is 5.1 sound via hdmi however, you will get no sound with anything that is stereo only.I was able to get around that issue by connecting the composite cable of the roku to the analog port on the 522k.Read a few posts on the roku forums about that, there was at least one poster that traded the Pioneer for a Yamaha because of that.If they will cpme over to satguys I'll show them how to solve the problem without trading receivers.:D

Overall,I'm so far very pleased with the upgrade.I was on the fence between 5 different models and ultimately got the best deal on the VSX 522 $125 shipped.Missed out on an Onkyo TX Sr 313 for $1 less but,in the end I think it was for the best.

could you elaborate on this? just got my pioneer 522k a few days ago and my sub came in just this morning. tried set everything up and the last thing was the roku. HDMI ports available are BD/game/DVD. get video on any of those via HDMI and no audio. analog audio from the roku to the receiver gives sound. just gotta find out what the deal is. o_O i did also see the thread about the guy just buying a whole new receiver. :( any help is appreciated!

To get basic stereo sound on the VSX 522 you will have to use a separate connection.I used composite to the dvd input. Not a perfect solution but it works and you can at least do dolby pro logic and pro logic II.I was browsing around vudu last night and sampled a few trailers, they advertised dolby digital plus but only came through as stereo but, when I chose an actual episode to watch the dolby came through just fine.To sum it up,I have rca (composite) and hdmi connected to the dvd input of the 522.If your not getting sound thru hdmi just use the signal select to go to the composite connection.
