Pioneer Plans Next-Gen Hybrid

Pioneer presented plans for upcoming Blu-Ray burners at the IFA 2006, saying that that they are planning a hybrid drive that can play Blu-ray and HD DVD discs for 2007.

The Pioneer BDR-103 would be the one that solves the High definition format issue for you. Pioneer's third generation of Blu-Ray burners is expected to be able to read both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs, as well as CD media. The drive will be equipped with an optical pickup unit developed by Pioneer. This could possibly lower the price of the drive to the 500 EUR tag (£336).

Currently, Pioneer has released the BDR-101A, capable of writing at 2x on BD-R/RE media and also supporting DVDs. The second generation of the company's BD burners is expected for January 2007. The BDR-102A will be a triple-writer, which means that it will support writing on BD, DVD and CD media.

Pioneer has strongly denied that its still-distant third-generation high-def Blu-ray Disc DVD burner, the BDR-103, will be a combi model that's also able to write to HD DVD.

Currently we have no plans to support HD DVD and I cannot confirm that we will be adding HD DVD support to any of our future-generation BD writer drives.

However, Pioneer will monitor the market situation with other formats and will consider adopting those formats as and when the market demands it.

Company X: We are going to end the format war with a hybrid player

Sony hears this, sends messinger to Company X with a secret sealed envelope.

Next Day Company X strongly denies ever having said they were developing a hybrid....

What is this 3 companies in a row now? Samsung, LG and now Pioneer?

JoeSp, Pioneer denies this rumor.

So, I guess CDInfo just wasted their time-- huh? Sure seems to be alot of product being anounced and denied at virtually the same time. This smells of smoke and as you all know, where there is smoke there is fire!:)
