I have a hdtv with screen adjustments of 1:1, full screen, aspect, zoom 1 and zoom 2. My dish 612 has 16 x 9, 4 x 3 (1) and 4 x 3 (2). My question is that when I watch tv I notice that the sides are cut off slightly. I could tell this for example when I watched a PBS show last night and a name came on the screen but instead of saying William it said illiam on the left of the screen. Is there a way to correct this? I have tried all setting combos between my tv and 612. Could this be because PBS is not hd? It is not just PBS where this happens but I can't say if it is just sd that does this yet or if it is hd and sd channels.

We have two local PBS affiliates, and I notice there are issues like this a lot. I noticed a name not fitting in the screen correctly, too. There are also screen size issues. One day a show may be in fullscreen, and the next day the show has a black box around it. Then, the same show may be in widescreen another day. We only have the SD feeds since the HD feeds are not available on Dish, yet. If it happens to all your channels, then it may be your TV. Before trying 4 X 3 (1) and 4 X 3 (2), you may want to check that your SD channels are either on Normal or Stretch. Partial Zoom and Zoom may cause the channel not to fit in the screen correctly. If I remember correctly, the format key is on the pound key near the zero key. As of now, we have an SD television (that was said to be "HD Ready") in the living room using component cables, that is set to 4 X 3 (2) because it is not widescreen and because the picture appeared tall and skinny on HD channels. The resolution could not be set higher than 480i, too. With all this being said, the picture looks very good, though. I programmed in only the SD channels along with HD channels (if there was no SD channel of it), and the HD channels are in widescreen. From time to time, I do compare the SD channels to the HD channels in the 5000s and 9000s since I locked out the HD channels that have the same numbers as the SD channels. My guess is that it is not your TV if you have a widescreen TV, but I could be wrong. I have an HDTV in my bedroom, and I think that it is sometimes the channels. Most of the time I notice the same thing but only on the local PBS affiliates. You may want to toggle the picture settings on your remote as well to see which appears to give you the right picture.

Is this an OTA channel of PBS you are watching? If so see what it looks like strat to the TV set. It sounds like if it is only one channel then it is that way from them and not an E* problem on the 612.

There is also an HDTV setup menu on the 612. Make sure that's set to 16:9, assuming you have a widescreen TV. I also recommend going digital (HDMI), where you will suffer far fewer anomalies than we see with analog hookups. The reason digital is good is not just PQ, but also signaling is bidirectional. Your TV set can tell the 612 what it's panel resolution is, and what modes it can handle, and the 612 will act accordingly. I've had zero aspect ratio anomalies on my Dish Network receivers, other than those attributable to the source. My other equipment hooked up to my widescreen TVs via analog give us nothing but grief trying to get the picture to show up right.

With your settings, any problem should be with the TV channel. You don't say whether you are watching OA PBS (HD) or Dish PBS (SD only). If you are watching SD PBS, your problem is PBS zooming their HD programming to their SD outlets - nothing you can do about it.

You do realize broadcasters, when creating graphics, work in an area called "safe title", right? It's also a conservative area. I've seen graphics pushed out of the safe title area and still appear on 4:3 sets.

More than likely (especially if it's one station) the graphics weren't designed to stay in the safe title are.

Also my tv is only 2 years old and uses a hdmi cable for dish network. It sounds like patmurphy hit the nail on the head. Thanks for all your replies.

What kind of HD set do you have? Projection(CRT), LCD or Plasma? This was a big problem for me on my 51" CRT Projection TV and understand these types suffer this kind of problem.

LCD 37" TV. Also last night I watched a BIO channel program I recorded. 16 x 9 only said BI in the lower corner but 4 x 3 (1) said BIO. I know BIO is HD but maybe the program was not (raw nerve).

Based on what you've told us, I would think your TV setting should be 1:1 (if I understand it correctly, the TV will just show whatever is sent to it... check your manual to confirm). Then set your 612 to 16:9. Step three is to press the * (or is it #... whatever is below the 7 key) on the remote to toggle the picture setting until 'HD' is set to 'Normal'.

If you're still having text get cut off, you either have a deeper problem with your TV, or Dish is downconverting the station incorrectly (instead of center cutting the 16:9 image, they're zooming on it).

Note: the above settings I gave you MAY result in black bars on the left and right of the screen based on the program.
