i was talking to a guy at a video store yesterday about satellites and a guy overheard us and afterwards we talked a bit of c band. he said he no longer has a bud but a receiver that he paid 900 dollars for a receiver 6 yrs ago, so i asked if it was a 4dtv and he said yes and it still works. he said he would take 60 bucks for it and i said deal! i am heading to pick it up right now and will have some questions i am sure once i set it up later today. good deal huh?

well i was thinking since i have the sats already programmed to my analog rec i can just use it like i do my dvb by just hooking up to my tv with the cables and just move the dish with my analog receiver, i can use a three way splitter and have all three receivers hooked to the dish at the same time right? now i can get it all, analog, dvb, and digicipher! about how many free channels are up there on digicipher , any feeds?

I think you'll have to call one of the programmers first and get it activated, download channel maps (I think thats on G1 or whatever its called these days) before it will even pick up the free channels.
NPS - Your One Call Solution - CBAND Satellite Programming C-band is one place, I don't think you have to actually buy programming to get it activated, just let them know you're still exploring it and trying to set it up.

no feeds on DCII since they are fixed channels. When a new channel is added, you need to download the maps

To get the maps, go to G1 TP3 C-Band and let the maps download. Or go to G5 and select the Starz mux (channel 100-109). As long as you have a lock (green light) let it download...takes 20 minutes or so :)

There is some free stuff on there. KU not much sans a couple PBS stations on K5 & K3 and the audio on X4....which is AMC5, AMC3 & G4 but the KU side :)

C-Band has some stuff free. Check G11, IA6 and G3

now i can get it all, analog, dvb, and digicipher! about how many free channels are up there on digicipher , any feeds?

On X4, Blackbelt TV and the Music channels are free. No feeds that I am aware of. The available subscription packages are pretty good. A bunch of movie channels on X4 also. I have watched quite a bit of movies since last night :)

hooking up a 4dtv

i got home and plugged in my 4dtv and connected the coax from the dish to the back, and moved the dish to g0 with the analog receiver and flipped through the channels, and was wondering how to download the map or maps for these things. i am just gonna use them for free stuff too, it looks like i might have to use it to move the dish too because thirty minutes later my analog rec went out! now it just says standby and doesnt power on, its just a pain in the butt having to mess with the tiny screw connectors on the back of the receiver to put the wires in, i tend to lose the little screws! i guess the analog chap mont got jealous and pissed that i got a new buddy!

well i left it on for about an hour and didnt see anything come up like downloads or anything, is it an automatic thing? the only thing i noticed was at first the picture was rolling and now the picture looks normal. i went to the sat install page and on quality it says 10 on the sats, it will take time i am sure.

Once you get a green light that means its locked on that channel. Maps take 10-15 minutes and you really don't know its done.

On my 905 I didnt have Georgia PBS (K3 640) in the maps...10 minutes later it was there :)

on my 920, once the unit is factory reset the number of default channels drops to something like 525.

Go to hidden menu:
Options, 6 7 7 8 and pick 1 for manally tune freq.

Look at number of channels. You can watch it move from 525 to somewhere around 5000 channels as it downloads the maps.

That screen is handy becase the lower left value is signal strengh, and right value is digital signal strength on the channel you are currently locked to/ viewing.

Hope this helps.

okay i plugged it up this morning and it is moving the dish now, set my limits, i noticed a few extra sat names on the sat setup screen. i notice though on the sat setup the signal is always 10 and i have tried the coax in all of the slots, i figured it would go to the lnb in port. my channel list shows 525 ch, can i hook it up to my cpu and download a map or maps? i am moving the dish from east to west and the picture doesnt look like a normal blank channel with all the white fuzz, it is a black screen with red lines going up and down. does anyone know what might be wrong? i am sure it is something minor.

digital either has a signal or its a black screen and no you cannot download the maps from the computer. It has to come from the satellite

Make sure your LNB's are set up properly in the menu setups. On my 905 its options 6-3 and I had to set it up as "C & KU Band LNBF's"....since the analog controls the polarity & the dish mover, I would say set it up as C & KU Band LNBF's

Look for some analog channels to figure out where your dish is pointing.

On 87W, Ch 20 has Doc Scott.
On G4 (Galaxy 16) 99W Ch 16 has Shepard's channel.

you can also get maps from 91W (G0 on the newly reset 4dtv sat list), transponder 24, Vertical polarity.

(or so I'm told... I can't get a lock on that with my small dish. I can lock digital transponder 13 H, and it downloaded some maps and moved from 525 channels to 756 or so, but I guess these are the wrong maps...)

Option 6778, pick #1 manual tune, and see if you can get a digital lock with that, sometimes you need to "help" it along.

well I have played with it a bit, I set my dish to g1, I didnt see any channels but I guess I was on it because I saw where it said I added like 220 channels, I put it on a few channels and it says waiting for info or channel. I am a bit confused but am trying to learn, this is a bit different from what I am used to. I hooked up my primestar to it and hit a few digicipher channels because the light lit up under dc but It says cannot find channel on the screen, on signal quality it says 52 on the primestar, but it said o on the big dish! But still added channels and said something about added info which I took it as meaning it added a map. I guess I will have to play with it a bit.

Joe, Is analog on G15(G1) showing anything? There should be ARTS on TP-5, EWTN on TP-12 and Shop NBC on TP-13 in the clear.

Does the trip counter increase? My old 905 also used to take hits on G1-156 4DTV, G14(G5) TP-5 and 18 analog and sometimes while on X4. I have seen a partial EPG come up on G5.
