Picking up a 4.5 cband dish

My local former cband installer guy has a rather unique 4.5 foot cband dish which is a red aluminum dish. I still have my 10 foot packed away till the move so there’s no chance I can set that up. I do want to still see analog cspan because who knows by the time I setup my 10 foot it might be gone. Anyways He wants $100 bucks for it and I might actually pay that but would a 4.5 foot dish actually pickup analog cspan ? Doesn’t have to be clear just want to see it. Anybody experimented with a 4.5 dish on analog before ? I just don’t want to buy a dish for $100 that may not even work with analog cspan because of its small size so I thought I’d ask and see if anybody has experimented with a such a small dish with any signal before ? Id like to pickup amc 11 131w channel 7 ntsc cspan.
 
The charts indicate 41 dBW in your area from 131W. It's possible you could receive it on a 4-foot (1.2m) dish. Not sure of the condition of that dish, but Angel Electronics in Mississauga has brand new 1.2m dishes for CDN$250 that you can pick up (no shipping).

The charts indicate 41 dBW in your area from 131W. It's possible you could receive it on a 4-foot (1.2m) dish. Not sure of the condition of that dish, but Angel Electronics in Mississauga has brand new 1.2m dishes for CDN$250 that you can pick up (no shipping).


I’m actually from Mississauga and Angel electronics isn’t too far from where I work. So with a 1.2 m dish you think I could receive it ?
 
I wish I had known you when I was in Brampton for 5 years 2014-2019. I had the unique situation of lots of free time, interest in the satellite hobby, and no place to put a dish since I rented a small place. I could install a dish at my office on a Saturday or a Sunday but only for the day then I had to take it down.

If you have a clear line of sight to 131W and an analog receiver, I think it's possible you might catch something with a good 1.2m dish and good LNB like a Titanium C1-PLL. But I can only guess.

Isn't 4.5 foot a bit small for C Band? Even my old 8.5 foot solid Dish doesn't do to well on some S2.
 


What a small world we live in. I am literally close to the border of Mississauga/Brampton. Yeah problem I have now is that I can’t see south from the backyard and since I live in a neighbourhood I can’t do it in the front yard. Parents are moving to a rural house sooner than later and until then I can’t put up the big wineguard 10 foot dish until we move and depending on the situation at the new house plus what I will be doing then. Oh also I was in Brampton today across from the plaza from shoppers world and saw this nice wineguard dish. Wonder how many years ago it’s been since it was used! There’s two big 8 foot dishes close to angel electronics on top of a wildwing down the road from angel electronics also. Angel electronics has a lot or cool satellite stuff and new NOS stuff too.

Likely will be able to receive 131w and at the same time 133w and 129w. Too small for any reliable reception as the beamwidth is looking at 3-5 satellites at the same time. If at all possible, install a dish that is at minimum, 2 degree compliant (7.5 - 8'). Any size smaller than that, you will be fighting interference from adjacent satellites. Reception isn't only about the estimated EIRP of a transponder to an area of the footprint.
 
Do you think the 4.5 dish at angel electronics pickup that cspan signal using a cband lnb and pointed towards amc 11 131 w ch 7 ?
I don't know, but possibly. If you choose to get a 1.2m dish to find out, you might even want to think longer term and get a better quality GEOSATpro 1.2m dish. If you are serious about this satellite stuff, even after you install your 10-foot dish, you can always use a good quality 1.2m for Ku band. If you get a Titanium C1-PLL LNBF for this immediate experiment with a mini-BUD, you can always use the LNBF on your big dish.

If the experiment to get analog signals with the mini-BUD fails, you will still gain experience and have fun doing it which is what hobbies are for. Listen to experts when researching, but always make your own decision in the end. Experts are often wrong. But if the worst-case consequences aren't devastating, then sometimes just go for it!

Only you can answer whether you have the budget to go for this right now.

I would have to take a day "DXpedition" to a large school field or similar to try to catch CSpan on 131W. And I'd need an analog receiver too.

Well if you need a analog IRD I have one I can spare. I have like 4 of them.
 
Will keep that in mind. Still waiting here for my C-band LNBF to arrive. Last heard, it is still in Miami after sitting there for a week with USPS. I'm hoping it arrives here this week.

Just note that USPS tracking isn't the most reliable thing in the world.I've gotten many items that tracking said hadn't even moved yet.
 
The order was only shipped 2 weeks ago. One more week should get it here considering the border crossing and pandemic factors.

I asked a friend at my local post office about why the mail is so slow right now. She said due to staffing issues they're sorting mail at multiple regional facilities and it's slowing things down. For instance, mail that always used to be sorted in Kansas City might now be sent to St. Louis or Springfield for sorting. She said international mail is worse- they're holding, inspecting and re-packaging some mail at Chicago and New York and that's slowing things down.
