The LATV website seems to be down right now, but here is a brief but accurate description of what it is from Wikipedia:

One of their outlets is KLAS 8.2 digital subchannel in Las Vegas. It all started on KJLA channel 57 which is a rim-shot Los Angeles DMA station in Ventura. Their digital transmitter is on Mt. Wilson, but for distribution in the LA area they have relied mainly on cable and LPTV channel 33 in the San Fernando Valley.

Because it's a faked-up demo box with hardcoded data. Much more reliable for trade shows than actual production hardware.

I think this is a real unit, I spent some time playing in the guide and menus and it ran just like any other recent Dish receiver.

The guide data is the Vegas stations, and it looks to be coming from the channel itself, there are no other connections/methods of getting it to the box.

That's cool. But is it really using PSIP data? Or is it using TV Guide? I know my local stations PSIP can be way off and I wouldn't trust it for DVR times.

With Echostar spinning off from Dish Network, it may not charge for dvr. This could be a way for them to build brand recognition for the new stb business, and knock Tivo out of business. If they price these low enough and don't charge a dvr fee, they could absolutely destroy Tivo.

If they went no fee, they could also do a lot of damage to cable's and satellite's ability to charge dvr fees, but they may not care since E* and DN are different companies.

Possible scenario: Charlie sells Dish Network service to somebody (liberty or At&t) and then once it is no longer his problem he destroys their ability to charge for one of the biggest because-we-can fees. And if they (DN, D*, Comcast) still charges DVR fees after that, Charlie starts another Satellite service that doesn't (since the new E* spin-off will have all the infrastructure they need to do so.) Wouldn't that be a hoot.

An all new mpeg 4 service that has daul tuner dvrs for ota and 2 sat tuners as well. Then add the ability to do all 4 tuners at the same time and you will destroy both DISH and the competition at the same time.

I've wondered if the new mpeg4 system Charlie has been hinting at would be an Echostar product (as opposed to Dish Network.) If a buyer had popped up before they made the split, they probably would've put in a clause saying Charlie couldn't start a new provider business for X number of years, but I don't think such a clause would stick now with E* a separate business.

No need, if the IPTV works properly. OTA for locals, then IPTV for everything else. Bundle with DSL, or Wildblue, or XOHM, or whatever as the ISP. That would get you everything else, as well as targeted advertising which resides on the HD. Or you could still pair it with a basic Dish Network or ExpressVU branded ViP series receiver if high speed internet was unavailable.

I have one other picture that is from the E* press conference. It is blurry because it is a high-zoom shot (it was only 1/4 of the slide on the screen at the time) but it shows the breakdown of the $10/$20/$30 HD offerings.

The $10 offering is very limited. The $20 is what you have now. The $30 is HD ONLY - no SD. I know they used to offer that for a very short time, looks like they are bringing it back.

This may already be out there, but I don't stay up on E* like I used to. If it is please forgive me

looks like they're doing the same thing as directv, except dish's hd pack is $10 instead of $5 because of the voom

only diff looks like dish includes mhd in the hd access and directv does not

According to masterdeals photo(great photo by the way), HDNET & MHD are included in the HD Essentials package.

HDNet Movies, Universal HD, NBA HD, NHL HD, and the Voom channels (total 19 channels) make up the HD Ultimate package.

If you have AEP would you still get NBA TV HD without HD Ultimate? My guess would be yes. If that is the case I will drop to HD essential with my AEP and save. Now if DISH would just tell us what package for sure Big Ten is going in for those outside those states in the region. I would like to keep Big Ten in HD without going with Multi-sport pack which us AEP customers should get in our package anyway.

Looks that way to me. I dont watch Voom anymore either as well as Universal, HD Movies and I am not an NHL fan. NBA TV HD is the only one in Ultimate I want so I hope I get it with AEP since it is in that package.

Ditto! Never really watched Universal nor HD Movies either but I'd love to keep NBA TV.
