Phoenix Coyotes File for Bankruptcy

This franchise has been one of the worst in sports, even going back to their days as the Winnipeg Jets.

Bettman said yesterday that the NHL does not desert its' cities...it helps them and that the Coyotes were not going anywhere.
Typical. But if you read the details it seems hard to imagine finding a new owner that wants to keep the team in Phoenix. They have lost $90 million dollars over the last 3 years, have pledged everything down to the sticks and skates as collateral to a hedge fund that lent them money, and they have a 30 year lease on an arena in the middle of the desert that no ones goes to.

This team has not been the same since they changed their uniforms:

That was a cool jersey and a fine uniform.

OTOH, I can't get used to this jersey:

Where I just moved to is 3.5 miles from Jobing.com Arena...University of Phoenix Stadium is right across the street...and other than a overpriced plaza of restaurants and Cabela's there is nothing there. This area is underdeveloped and with the financial meltdown any new construction to fill in the area won't happen for years.

As for the Coyotes, the Bankruptcy Judge didn't rule today on the NHL's motion...it will happen in 2 weeks.

The Coyotes only have until Mid-June to decide if it will remain in Arizona, that's when the NHL finalizes it schedule for the new season.

Well if you want the Canadian perspective on the situation, listen to The FAN 590 Toronto - Listen Live

They are drooling over the thought of having a team in Hamilton. If the Judge rules they can leave; that is when the real battles will begin with Toronto and Buffalo in the middle of it, over infringing on their territorial rights.

The Maple Leafs don't want another team in their backyard unless they own a piece of the pie, and about 20% season ticket holders, etc, are fans from southern ontario, right over the border.

Great post! Seeing that my family STILL lives in western NY(about an hour from Buffalo) and big followers of the Buffalo Sabres and the Rochester Amerks...I am listening now because I am a causal fan and likes to watch the NHL on occassion.:up

oh but he had no issues with Minnesota moving to Dallas, Quebec moving to Denver, Winnipeg moving to Phoenix & Hartford moving to Carolina

GET RID OF BECKMAN!!! Bring hockey back where it belongs...Northern US & Canada!

I heard the other day about a potential change in standing ....
Thoughts of possibly making a North and South instead of the East and Western Conferences.

There's been more talk of the Red Wings moving to the Eastern Conference if things were to stay the way they are now.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has allegedly said he would rather see the Phoenix Coyotes move to Winnipeg than Hamilton, according to documents filed in the team's bankruptcy court case.

Earl Scudder, a lawyer who works for Coyotes majority owner Jerry Moyes, filed an affidavit Friday that said Bettman told him this last month when told there was a buyer interested in buying the team and moving it to southern Ontario.

According to The Canadian Press news agency, Bettman allegedly told Scudder that Hamilton's Copps Coliseum isn't an ideal destination because it's over 30 years old, saying "if the team did return to Canada, it would be Winnipeg," according to the filed document.

Yep. Just play in Canada and the US border cities. A reciepe for the following US TV contract:

NONE.

The NHL must do everything it can to be in every part of the USA.
