So, heres the skinny: kids computer (Dell Dimension 3000) got virus, so I reformatted and installed Win7. Unfortunately chipset has no Win7 drivers, so I decided to just go back to XP. Cd drive won't recognize XP disc and this model cannot boot externally ... any suggestions?

Windows 7 does work on the 3000
Will Windows 7 work on dell dimension 3000? - Windows 7 Forums

When trying Win7 did you boot from a bootable DVD?
If yes, most likely you have a bad boot WinXP disk...

If not, check whether the PC sees the optical drive in the BIOS.
And press F12 when booting to chose boot device.

Win7 doesn't support that driver; says so right on that site .... dont not know what those posters are talking about :-(

I believe the 3000 won't pass Win7 compatibility test.
But in most cases that doesn't mean much.

What driver are you talking about? Video? Audio?
Have you tried XP-compatibility mode? Have you checked optional Win7 updates after installing?

Can't see the link from Canada.
Is that a PCI card? Looks like your board has only PCI slots...
Documentation

If that's the only driver Win7 has problems with - yes, replacing the video card should fix it.

Have a look what else has a yellow/red mark in Device Manager.
Check whether you can disable/prioritize video in BIOS.

No other problems; its a GeForce 8400 card

Stupid q: can I just buy a new video card and will it work? If so, which one do I buy?

This will correct the problem; right?

Unless you are using this link just to show us what you are looking at; PLEASE look elsewhere. You can buy this card online for half that cost AND if you are thinking of spending $80 or so; you can get even better cards for the money. IMHO

If you listed Staples simply because you need to shop at a local store out of convenience; then forgive me. Just trying to help you save your hard earned money.

It has win7 drivers and this is $20 less at newegg, but I have earned $15 reward dollars so its a wash

GeForce 8400 now installed and everything is going well . . . thanks everyone for your help. By the way, Staples price matched the card and I got it for $45.
