Can anyone help me with this?
What format do I need to record a DVD in, so it can be played back in Italy.
Are the DVD players overseas able to play any recorded DVD's from here?

Any help with this is greatly appreciated

As long as you don't region code it - yes, any DVD playable in North America, will be playable in Italy.

(You will be able to region code and attach other DRM protection only if you are a professional licensed producer).

Italy is a PAL country, isn't it?
I suspect most DVD players there can play NTSC format too. But to be on a safe side I would encode your DVD in PAL.

From DVD region code - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:DVD-Regions_with_key-2.svg" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/92/DVD-Regions_with_key-2.svg/400px-DVD-Regions_with_key-2.svg.png"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/9/92/DVD-Regions_with_key-2.svg/400px-DVD-Regions_with_key-2.svg.png
In general, it is easier for consumers in PAL countries to view NTSC DVDs than vice versa. Almost all DVD players sold in PAL countries play both kinds of discs, and most modern PAL TVs can handle the converted signal. However, most NTSC players can't play PAL discs, and most NTSC TVs don't work with PAL video.
I have not seen a DVD player in Europe incapable of handling NTSC for 8 years (UK/Germany/France).
This is why I said make sure you can play it and it will be playable there.
If you make it in PAL, there is a chance you won't be able to check whether you did it right...:)

The best thing to do is to double-check it with the person who you are sending your DVD to: to make sure that the DVD player and the TV set are both "multi system" (support NTSC in addition to PAL). But as diogen said, this is a rather safe assumption. It would be unusual to have a PAL-only TV set in Europe.

Welcome to the forum, nicholasg!

Thanks very much, Ilya and diogen. Great advice that I will follow in hopes to achieving a much anticipated DVD from Europe.
In short, my Son just got married and my new Daughter-in-Law's half the family lives in Italy. I can't wait to send them the Wedding DVD.

Thanks again, and have a Great One.
