I picked up a used H20 unit because the seller stated that I could use it as a OTA DTV reciever without a DirecTV account. I don't have a dish (heresy, I admit it) but simply wanted to use it to tune in terrestrial digital broadcasts.

I hooked it up but can not get it to respond to the remote. I have tried reset and pulling the plug for a few minutes. No matter what I do it goes to the Satilite Search screen and just sits there at 0% complete. Eventually the screen saver kicks in but thats it. The unit is very clean and the remote looks brand new, which is what the seller said it is.

The seller gave me an old card and said that should do it but the unit gave me a nasty-gram message stating that it was an outdated card.

The seller swears that this is a working unit. Any suggestions? Is there a way to "quit" the sattilite search using the controls on the front panel? Do I need a more up to date card to get it to work?

Thanks.

I believe you need to have a D* account in order for it to work ...

If D* receivers are like E*, they need to see a sat before the ATSC tuner will work, therefore you will need to set up a dish pointed at one of the D* sats....

You do need to have the H20 activated to use it for ota broadcasts.

and if you need to have it active you may as well have programming on it.
Then again, that cost you $ 5 p/m for the mirrored programming, will they let you activate it and have NO programming on it ? (so you could use it for only OTA ?)
