OK here is what I know...

With this info on the 942>942+ swap, who's going to be the brave soul and open their 942 and document (pictures) the guts to compare w/ their replacment 942+?

I'll pop of picture of my 942, that is not a problem
All it will be is the mpeg2 decoder chip being replaced with a combo unit, that is it

You don't feel a complete MOBO swap-out will be needed?

Directv doesn't even carry NFL ST in HD either ;), it's all 1280x1280i garbage
every Sunday I have 2 or 3 true HD NFL games on Echostar from Epsn and CBS HD, I find this very ironic

Versus no NFLST with E*, it is much better.

That is the very attitude that will ruin HDTV

no Voom(or any HD) is better to Dish sub's than HD-Lite

Gerry, I am 99% sure it would just be the broadcom Mpeg2 chip(about the size of a silver $)

We got your point. NFLST is God gift to the satellite community. Not. There are plenty of ways to form your own poors man NFLST through Dish, ExpressVu, and FTA.

Enjoy your crappy HD-Lite. :)

As always...thanks for the info Scott!

As to the 942+, any chance it'll have a larger hard drive?
Nope.If I had to guess at the way upgrades would work would be you would get a new 942+ in the mail and you need to mail your 942 back to Dish for upgrading, that unit would then be sent out to someone else. IF this is true then the folks at Dish are a lot smarter then I gave them credit for in the past. :D

If I were Dish Marketing Team, afer all HD channels are put at 1920x1080i, I will have a big marketing strategy and pictch that Dish Network is the only satellite company providing TRUE HD channels!!!!! I would also promote this at CES if they could put all the channels at 1920x1080i before CES. And once and for all put to shame DirecTv publicly.

P.S. this could only help DirecTv subs and who they have to thank.... Dish Network HDTV consumers....

Well, a little more than that as you have to get the OS and drivers updated etc etc etc.

It's not the end of the world but it is not just upgrading the decoders; you have to include all the software and potentially any bios/firmware that surrounds it.

Cheers,

Can you say lawsuit. What is the definition of HD. It's not 1920x1080 or nothing. How many "HD" televisions don't have 1920x1080?

Physically, how is the MPeG decoder chip held on the board? Is it a friction or clamp fixation into the socket? Is it soldered into the board?

Law suite for what for putting the correct resolution for HD on the market. Anything lower than 1920x1080i or 1280x720p is only done with the intent of compressing the HD feed. This has lots of ramifications as the channels become softer and loose lost of details. Therefore it is called HD LITE. Do not argue with the resolution part of the HDTV not having native resolution of 1920x1080i. That arguments goes out the window because there is so much scaling up/down that by the time the signal gets to your TV or my TV the picture is increadibly bad and not what it was meant to be.

Let's not defend HD LITE. HD LITE is bad for all. Why are you defending HD LITE?

Not having NFL:ST means very little to most E* subs. If it were a big deal, we'd be D* subs. So taunting an E* board about it doesn't make much sense, does it?

It is akin to taunting subscribers to the Wall Street Journal about not having a good sports section. Guess what? They don't care!

Instead E* subs are choosing to make our stands on quality HD. If D* subs are happy with NFL:ST and HD-lite, then so be it. No skin off of my back. It will be interesting to see what D* charges for ST over the next year or two, as the much more costly contract extension kicks into place.
