OK, final Rcvr input

Well, my Denon 1909 arrived via UPS yesterday afternoon. I had a X-mas party to attend, so I didn't get to completely unpackage it yet. The packaging was flawless though. The Denon box was packed in another big box with a bunch of those little popcorn fluffers. I can't wait to get things setup tonight!

How do you plan on hooking up your speaker wires? I noticed this receiver has banana plug inputs. You using banana plugs or just the traditional way?

Im going bare wire, the way I always have. I bought some good wire from monoprice awhile back and I just twist it up tight and insert, then crank the screw down. you'll only have problems if a stray wire touches the case, and then the rcvr goes into shutdown.

I have a fairly large collection of dual banana plugs from back when I worked in the Hewlett-Packard voltmeter lab. Like these:

I find them to be perfect because you connect them once and then the pos and ground are always matched. It is very easy to label them, so the whole interconnect thing becomes a non-issue. I use them on both ends of the speaker wire run wherever possible.

The connector has a relief where you can string the coax for 75 ohm applications. I generally run the speaker wire straight into the crimp down area, tighten the screws, and then use a nylon tie down through this relief hole to hold the speaker wire.

It allows me to use shorter wires, because I can easily unplug the speaker wires when accessing the rear and be confident that I will hook it up correctly afterwards.

I just use the industrial unplated ones, because in my 30 years in T&M applications, I have never had a problem with these things corroding. However, if you must have gold, RS and others sell them for about $8-10/ea as opposed to $3 ea for the unplated ones.

Banana plugs for me. I hate trying to get the bare wire into those little holes. My eyesight ain't what it used to be. Not to mention I know it's secure.

They do the matching for you and have the correct spacing so you only need to do 1 plug operation to connect. Price is essentially the same

Honestly, I don't like the side fed 90° banana plugs. Instead I prefer the back loaded ones. Seems like a cleaner fit-up.

I was digging through some things in a spare bedroom I have and I found some Monster Cable Twist Crimp ones still in the box! I'm gonna give those a try. If they work for me, why spend more money!?!?

Well, I got everything setup last night. Disconnected the old Harman Kardon AVR and replaced with the new Denon 1909. After eliminating all the digital coaxial and toslink cables, the HDMI switch and a few extra unneeded cables from my past setup, going with the new full HDMI receiver definitely cleaned things up behind my equipment.

After I got everything connected, I ran Audyssey per instructions to auto-calibrate my speakers and room. To my amazement, I was shocked at how accurate the results were. The measurements of each speaker channel was spot-on! I saved the results and popped in a BD. (Casino Royale).

OMG! Watched with Dynamic EQ on (red light) and chose the Lossless PCM track (obviously). My Lord! Sounded wonderfully as expected! The wife even came down to compliment how good it soudned.

I spent the rest of the night watching scenes of different BD's to test out the new AVR.

The Denon isn't physically as pretty as my HK, but the improvement in sound is definitely worth it. Not that the Denon is ugly, but the HK was really sharp looking. And besides, you can't even see the receiver in the dark while your watching movies, so who cares.

I have a feeling we will be watching a lot of flicks in the HT this holiday weekend! Woooo whooo!!!!
