Any official word yet on whether DISH will carry the new FOX Sports 1 channel (replacing Speed) starting on August 17?

If DISH does, in which programming packages?

I know it isn't always safe to "assume" anything, but one would think that since it is a re-branding of an existing channel already carried by Dish (i.e. Speed), that it would still be carried and remain in it's current program package...at least until the next time its carriage agreement is up for renewal.

Edit...guess I stand corrected below.

Well..according to this report which is a VERY legitimate site, Dish and Direct do NOT have deals to carry Fox Sports 1 on Aug. 17th:

"A month before launching its much publicized all-sports network, Fox has yet to cut carriage deals with three of the country’s four biggest distributors, raising the possibility that its August launch of Fox Sports 1 will fall short of the 90 million homes the channel is expected to have. DirecTV, Dish Network and Time Warner Cable — representing more than 46 million subscribers — still are negotiating to carry FS1 on Aug. 17, which is when Fox will turn its motorsports channel, Speed, into a multisport network."

Very interesting read about what could happen if a deal isn't reached and the cost of the channel. Currently Speed costs 23 cents per subscriber, FS1 is asking to start at 80 cents.

LOL, 57 cents more per sub, for that channel. Sheesh. They need to bring it and show what itll do before asking for an increase. I guess they need a way to pay for all the UFC stuff they jumped into as well as MLB in 2014.

Great...now I can worry about losing BOTH of the channels covering NASCAR (ESPN & FS1). :(

I agree, but where do they justify charging over 3 times what they ask for now?

I'm assuming they have to raise their rates because they are spending more money trying to get contracts to carry more sports. Sounds like they want to try and compete with ESPN and if that's true they are going to be spending some major coin.

Not quite apples to apples. They are merging Fox Soccer Channel programming (well, not EPL games, but the other stuff) onto FS1, so it wouldn't be 3x, but it does seem to be an increase for potentially less overall programming. I mean who wants to pay 80 cents for the Craftsman Truck qualifying? I don't want to lose the FA Cup, but I don't want the bills to continue to increase.

Fox can charge more when they actually have the programming to justify it.

If they want to justify the cost increase based on programming, then FX should be nearly free now, since all the Big 12, Pac12 and MLB programming will be moved from FX to FS1. I'll miss some Big 12 games as FS1 will have most of the tier 2 games but really don't care anymore. Pay tv is getting out of control with skyrocketing costs and splintered channel offerings. I would just as soon listen to sports on the radio or wait for the dvd's of tv programming anymore. With all the repeats and commercials there is little of value regularly broadcast. Even sports events are getting bombarded with commercial delays, at least on the radio I can still get some commentary during the numerous tv timeouts.

Hey Fox,why didn't you save all your cash from the last Dish deal,in order to have enough to compete with ESPN?I have to call bs on Fox,you rebrand a channel that has already been negotiated for,and demand more money. If I were Dish,Dtv,or twc,I'd tell them to shove it.Re-brand if ya want, when the old contracts expire for speed, then we'll talk.

This could be something they are looking at, negotiating to put it into something other than a basic package.

Cable companies may lower bills by getting rid of sports

You may have experienced your cable bill rising ever so slightly recently, and it’s a running joke that our cable bills keep getting more and more expensive, but that actually has mostly to do with sports programming. The fees that cable operators pay to offer sports networks have risen a whopping 113% over the last 10 years or so.

In 2012, cable providers paid regional sports networks an average of $2.47 per subscriber to carry their channels as part of their digital basic programming, which is up from $1.12 in 2002. This means that you’re paying almost $2.50 every month for a sports channel that you may or may not be using (fees for ESPN and ESPN2 was a combined $5.71 in 2012), and the odds are, you aren’t watching sports.

I see a breaking point for some sports programming and all these channels get on the original series bandwagon. Series are costly, main reason it works so well for premiums is they can charge for it.
