NXT rookies invading RAW

Confirmed: Sheffield Suffers Broken Ankle, Lengthy Absence?by Matt Boone
Aug 20, 2010 To update our earlier report on WWE Superstar Skip Sheffield suffering an injury during this week's WWE live event in Honolulu, Hawaii, it appears that the Nexus member did in fact bang himself up pretty good.According to a report on F4WOnline.com, the early word from those within the Raw crew is that Sheffield suffered a broken left ankle, and will be out of action as far as in-ring activity, for quite some time.

Interesting read from PWTorch specialist Richard Gardner on the Nexus:

GARDNER'S KEY MOMENT OF THE WEEK: Has WWE squashed Nexus's drawing power after the ending to Summerslam?

Aug 22, 2010 - 3:53:49 PM

By Richard Gardner, Torch specialist

The most disappointing aspect of Summerslam last Sunday wasn't the lackluster undercard or the cheap finish in the Orton-Sheamus WWE Title match. The problem I saw was that WWE killed the Nexus's drawing power.

Examine the crowd reaction for when the Nexus was run off by the WWE crew on the Summerslam lead-in edition of Raw, or when Wade Barrett's stable made their way to the ring on Sunday night. Despite being composed of relatively green wrestlers who had never appeared on a national wrestling show before NXT began, the Nexus was over. Really over, to the extent where they had more heat than any main event heel act in recent memory. Surely, this will translate into an impressive buyrate once the numbers come in.

Yet any attempt to draw the Nexus angle out further will be hampered by the inexplicable finish on Sunday night. It was not so much that John Cena won the match that was the problem, more the manner in which he did.

The elimination match came down to Cena on the WWE side, and Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett representing the Nexus. Barrett DDT'd Cena on the concrete floor, which apparently isn't worth a disqualification any more, as the move was in full view of the referee. Despite the odds being staked against him, Cena was able to mount a herculean comeback reminiscent of Hulk Hogan at the peak of his powers. As Barrett tapped out to the STF, it was hard to ignore that this was one gigantic missed opportunity.

The WWE-Nexus feud could have been the basis for the WWE's Pay-Per-Views for the rest of 2010, but I believe the Nexus's drawing power died in the ring on Sunday night. Why would anyone pay to see WWE vs. Nexus again when John Cena beat Barrett and Gabriel so convincingly at the end of a 35-minute match?

Instead of building for the next WWE-Nexus match, Raw was built around Nexus eliminating members, culminating with the removal out Darren Young. Also on Monday night, the group claimed a number of unconvincing victories over the WWE team in singles matches, where count-out victories and interference was par for the course. Nexus was booked to look inferior to their WWE counterparts. If WWE management does not take the Nexus seriously, then neither will WWE fans.

WWE management shot itself in the foot with its treatment of the Nexus over the past week. What was a credible main event threat is well on its way to becoming a mid-card joke. The treatment event carried over to the house shows in Hawaii and Japan where they were in mid-card matches and did the chorus line taking bumps for top babyfaces in the main events.

Aside from Barrett, I don't believe anyone in the group has the ability to become a top star in WWE, but the worth of Nexus as a group was always greater than the sum of its individual parts. That the group is already being broken up represents a massive missed opportunity. Wade Barrett's credibility as a singles wrestler has also been undermined by losing to Cena after having a two-on-one advantage.

I believe WWE set in motion the beginning of the end for one of its most over acts for no particular reason on Sunday night. For that reason, Summerslam was more of a disappointment than the star ratings or overall PPV scores suggest.

Update On The Future Of Nexus..Posted on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 12:32 pm

- The current plan for Nexus is for the group to disband by October. There is talk of bringing in some of the standout rookies of Season 2 and many of the Nexus stars will remain part of the main WWE roster, but the group’s days are numbered.

Good news about Nexus being disbanded. They weren't booked that bad in the beginning, but the Summerslam match and singles matches on the 8/16 RAW completely exposed them as very green wrestlers. I'd like Barrett and maybe Gabriel to stay around, but the rest should go back to FCW.

The Nexus in my opinion will go down as a group that had a lot of potential in the beginning, but was ruined by bad booking and talent that just couldn't carry the large ball that they were given. It brings back memories of the Alliance and NWO 2002, in terms of angles that could've been great but weren't.

Couldnt agree more bad booking ruins everything.vince needs to retire and hhh needs to retire and help stephanie on creative since hhh is old school and hes being injured too much lately:)and cut this soap opera crap outta here:rant: and start getting back to wrestling and quit talking this is wrestling not talk shows

You've said this same thing about HHH before when he's still got some good years in him to help build the super stars.. bring DX back as in all of them or all cept for HBK. WWE is a soap opera, it always has been with just a little tossing people around a ring..its just in how they set it up and with who that brings ratings and without those like Austin and The Rock, it won't happen.

here is proof...Linda is playing the WWE card on both sides...from a recent pwbts.com "as I see it"

Then, there's Linda McMahon almost unforgivable response to a question about Lance Cade just after his death from what has been referred to as "heart disease": "I might have met him once". Then, when Chris Nowinski was critical of the comment, WWE attempted to claim that Lance Cade was "a total stranger" to Nowinski. Note to WWE: you can pick your opinions, but you can't pick your facts. Here are the facts regarding Nowinski and Lance Cade: Cade and Nowinski started together in WWE at around the same time and were also at one point were tag team partners in Ohio Valley Wrestling, with Cade eventually settling into his more well-known tag teams with Mark Jindrak and Trevor Murdoch.

At best, Linda McMahon's comment was unfeeling as hell. At worst, it was an deliberate attempt to steer attention yet again from anything to do with her business experience at WWE...the very experience that she's used as her qualifications to be the Republican noominee for US Senate in Connecticut. In other words, it's OK when said experience is a positive..but when it's being used for criticism, McMahon doesn't want to discuss it.

You guys have NO idea how disingenuous her campaign is! First, her ads run damn near 24/7. Second, she goes to great length to portray WWE as a family oriented soap opera (RIP kayfabe). And third and most importantly, WWE programming has been turned into vanilla crap. I guess she never heard that it's not where you're from, it's where you're at!!!

hhh needs to retire and help step on creative.if he wrestles stay away from the title picture and help build young talent and quit with his ego and pushing himself:D

A lot of fans don't seem to care for Hunter, especially after his reign of terror from 2002-2004. I'm kind of in the middle. There were times when I despised him and then times where he wasn't too bad. I've never felt like he was as good of a wrestler as HBK was, but that doesn't mean that he can't put on good matches or be genuinely entertaining.

I used to be a member of a popular wrestling forum, and there was one guy that despised Hunter so much, that in 2007 after he came back, he brought a sign to a RAW show that said "Tear it again HHH". Hunter saw the sign and got really mad and told the guy to "Suck it".
