About 3 weeks ago, I decided to reset my 811 as I had not done so in about a week and I was going out of town for Thanksgiving weekend and did not want it to lose audio and start stuttering like it does so often.

Upon resetting, it came up running horribly slow. Even unplugging it, it continued to run for like 30 seconds and executing the commands I had entered, now that is strange.

I could not get it out of the slow mode so I pulled the smart card and the power and reset it again. Guess what? It came up normally WITHOUT THE SMART CARD inserted and all of my subscribed channels were there but I could not tune in anything I was not authorized for. Weird.

I retired my 811 in Sept (for a 942) but it never had a removable smart card.

Nope, it's an 811 and there's a drop down door on the left side of the 811 with a smartcard in it. I'm looking at it right now, it has the little gold chip on it, say's Nagravision Swiss made and has a serial number on it. The front has logos for some of the Dish channels like CNN, ESPN, MTV, Nick at Nite, TBS, etc and says "This side up" Dish Network.

Can someone explain this? Do I have a dinosaur model or something?

Mine has a slot for one but no card inside. I had always wondered if I could stick a card in there from one of my retired receivers just to make it easier to do a reset.

Yeah, all the 811's have intergrated smart cards, and the slot is for security, ie if the onboard chips security is compramised, alot easier to send the users new more secure cards than to replace the entire receiver! (Id say you have a more secure card, but the newest, most secure cards have no logo on them at all, just say dish on them!)

It didnt say anything bout the card as that slot is disabled via the software, and E* can send an update to 'turn it on', but hasnt yet (for the reason above) . If it was enabled, and the card was out, it would say 'no card' on the screen!

But it = alot easier via reset , I usually just slide my license in there to trip the sensor, and it will reboot (vs unplug etc)

Edit: Maybe you used that card to reset the box a while ago, and forgot about it?

Pure speculation:

His particular 811 has a fried smart card chip inside, and the fix was to use a standard external card instead of jsut trashing the box.

Someone asked earlier for him to compare the numbers on the card vs. what's shown in System Info - that would tell us.

942 is a winner!
