Nokia today announced that its researchers in Germany have completed a data call over its mobile WiMAX 802.16e technology development system.
The call was error free and connected computing and baseband modules at a Nokia development center. The company is now positioned to conduct WiMAX trials during 2006.
“This is an important step in our WiMAX development work, and we are very encouraged by the results,” said Markku Hollstrom, General Manager, Broadband Wireless business program, Networks, Nokia, in a prepared statement.
Mobile WiMAX is considered one alternative in the race to combine broadband and mobility, although it trails other 3GPP systems. Standards for WiMAX 802.16e are still in the works within the WiMAX Forum, but are expected to be completed later this year.
