No new software?

I agree Dish should fix the Seagate problem. I bought by FreeAgent right after the EHD function was enabled, which means I didn't know about the problem until I already had the drive. I want sleep mode to work. I don't want to spin the drive 24/7. And bottom line, seems like a very simple fix from Dish would address this. They just need to get around to uploading it.

2) Seagate's software only runs on Windows (not my Mac)
Are you sure about that ? If so, that's a poor design... This functionality should be done in the drive's firmware and not require Windows to "monitor" it or keep it awake. Sounds like all they're doing is a random read every so often....

But there are plenty of other similar turnkey solutions out there (Western Digital, FreeAgent Pro(right?), etc.) that work just fine. And the general user is not going to buy a bare seagate and an enclosure.

Dish never says anything about needing/requiring a "video archive/video dvr drive":

Sure there are plenty that seem to work and people are getting by just fine with them so Dish may not see the need to try to find a way to make one particular solution work when there are many others that will. Dish is not the only company that doesn't make every possible combination work with their equipment.

If you can't leave it running 24/7, expect a failure and right when you can't afford one.

Dish may not specify that you need a particular kind of drive for their EHD function but they also don't specify that you need an external cooling fan for their 622 or 722 either.

I have a 750gb Western Digital hooked up to a 722. The drive goes to sleep all the time. It only takes a couple of seconds to wake it up. Wonder why they have this issue with the Seagates and not the WD ones?

is this the WD you have?

Western Digital My Book Essential WDH1U7500N

i just bought this yesterday - $99 at newegg- when you say 'wake it up' do you have to do anything or does the 722 wake it up without intervention?

i have a maxtor4 on my 722 and i have to power it on/off all the time - i'm hoping i don't need to do this with my 211 and the new WD

Looks like the one...except it was a 750. I just plugged it in, let it format and that was it. I noticed later that when I wanted to access the stored recordings after a long period of not using the drive it would take a few seconds to pull up the recordings list. I figured out by listening to the drive that it isn't running and that few seconds of time the drive is spinning up causing the menu on the receiver to stall.

So to answer your question....no...with the WD one I have I didn't have to do anything with it. I just smile knowing the drive isn't running all the time.

great - thanks for the info - that's a relief. don't want to worry about waking anything up! mines a 750gb too

Known problem - don't call us message
