We're about to move into an apartment (in NYC) that has a balcony, but the angle is 'cutting it close' (based on a site survey from an independent contractor). A few people have mentioned to us types of modifcations you can do to possibly get a signal.

One I've heard of is some kind of box people usually put on top of RVs to obtain a signal... is anyone familiar with this or has anyone done this and if so - what's this box called?

Thanks -

there are all kinds of roof mounted dishes for rv's, some are flat, some look like domes, some look like dishes, but they are all still satellite dishes, and they are all expensive.
the only way you are going to be able to get a signal is to put your dish in the line of sight from the satellite

NYC... glad to hear that you got the sight survey... just out of curiousity what did they charge?? If I may ask what kind of balcony railing and what story are you on. I may suggest that you talk to someone about using boling the mast on the outside of the balcony to get around the buiding if that is what is blocking the view. If neededfit the mast as an extension. Dpends on how bad you want satellite I guess. Also direct you can get a mast from the contractor that was out there and find a muffler shop and get a pipe bent by them to. Depends on how bad you want satellite. Also... DirecTV has a mast for there Hi-Def OTA's that is actually longer then the mast that come with the Phase III dish.. that may work too.

Just one small nit to pick... it's site survey, not "sight survey". You're surveying the site of the dish mounting.
