Got a Openbox S9 receiver from a freind recently. Want to know what equipment is recommended to maximize my viewing experince at minimal cost. I want a small motorized dish and correct lnbs and any other recomendations. I have a disconnected direct TV slimline dish on the house already which Ive read on this forum is not good for FTA. Please enlighten me on the best direction.

First of all :welcome to SatelliteGuys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would go with a 36" or 1 Meter Dish. To start off and get familiar with FTA. Then I would add a motor later.
Here is a Link to a good dish: http://www.satelliteav.com/p/shop/?ws_cat=517
This comes with an LNBF so all you would need then would be some coax and connectors.
If you look around you can also find em on abandoned gas stations and such too.

You cant beat that deal!!

Thanks for the offer on the used dish but im thinking new. Saw some new dishes on e-bay that are reasonable. However they do not have the LNB included. Any recomendations for a LNB?

how far are you from Atlanta? Galaxy Marketing is located down there in the burbs, they used to be a sponsor here, they sell some dishes and sat-equipment.

With the correct linear lnb, you can pick up some signals with the DTV slimline dish. I have been using one for years to get Hispasat 30W. Gets all the TP's on 30W and only fades in real heavy rain storms.

Ok, any help with the Openbox S9. Got everything in place I feel like ya'll laughin at me. lol My breakdown is as follows: Signal Intensity: 45% Signal Quality 5%. 36" disc, DG 380 1.2 motor and a WS Int ESX521FE: LNBF. Purchased from Galaxy Markt. After hooking everything up nothing. Checked: LNB Freq, Transponder. Saw online a lot of people are having this problem and a site called Openbox.us, there support requires purchase from them. Elsewhere on line anyone posting their upgraded firmware seems to have been shut down. Any suggestons/support welcome to get whats needed to make this work if possible?

I've a hunch you're going to have to expand on what you've done so far to try to make it all work. 45% intensity and 5% quality means you have zero signal being received.

What azimuth are you pointing the dish? What elevation is the dish? Have you received any signal quality at all? What satellite / transponder are you trying to receive? What are your physical geographic coordinates (or zip code)? What firmware is in the S9? This site has some S9 firmware. I use a version that is not found on this site. I like 2011Aug30 version.

First thing:
Aiming a dish for the first time is not easy.
It's not Plug-N-Play.
99.99% of the time, the equipment is in proper working order.

45% Signal Quality 5%
That is a good thing - shows you have connected the cables correctly

ESX521FE LNBF
In the Receiver's Antenna Setup Menu, look for the LNB Freq. - it should be set to 10750, and Type:"Standard"

DG 380 1.2 motor
Look on the Motor Bracket, and make sure you have the Latitude Scale set to your Lat

Yeah give us a lot more detailed info on what you have done so far.

AND no we are not laughing at you, we all started out just like you one time or another.
We will help you get it going.

Ask Galaxy which sat is straight south. Point it south and move it up and down slightly from the degree Galaxy gives you.

When you do this set your receiver to a known working channel on the sat you are trying to hit. You should be able to get something but remember, it takes a couple of seconds for a signal to lock...so move it very slow.

Once you have a signal you'll know:

1. It works!
2. Where the belt is :)
3. Where the next sat should be which is 2 degrees over.

Once you have two sats you will know how far 2 degrees is and will be able to start locking them in.

No one is laughing at you and you'll laugh at yourself after you learn how.

Get a channel list in it first...anyone here can PM you one. Trying to hit a sat with no channels sucks. You may get a tp signal but it might not be the right sat.
With a channel programmed in for a certain sat you will know you are on that sat. There is a chance it will lock a channel from the wrong sat but they have logos these days and that helps a lot.

Do you still have it? Can you ship it to Toronto (Richmond Hill) Canada?
I have now with me small dish (17") and I tried to find channels but without success. The Q(uality) is always zero. I think it's because of the small dish, isn't it?

Shipping from the U.S. to Canada will probably be a little expensive. If you go to Dr. Sat in Oakville, just 30 km to your southwest, you can buy a brand new dish and carry it home in your car. A new dish is from $75. Consider the 1.2m dish: some day you'll be glad you got the bigger one. They will even do the install, if you need them to.

Zero quality is due to two issues. Yes, the dish is undersized, but primarily because the LNBF is for a DBS satellite system like Bell, Dish or DirecTV. You need a larger dish to collect more signal from the weaker FSS satellites and a LNBF that tunes lower frequencies and linear polarity.
