Newb ?"s about 211 Dvr

I searched but could'nt find the answer.
I just added an EHD to my 211 and in reading Dishes manual on recording shows I came across an area that seems to indicate that I do not need to have the receiver on to have it record shows. Is this true? I am asking because my father has Direct tv and the tech said he needs to leave his receiver on for the dvr to record.

Actually when you shut off the receiver about all that happens is it kills the live video and replaces it with tips and "Press Select to watch TV". The current draw for the receiver goes down very little. Now if you turn off the hard disk drive or unplug it or the receiver.... good bye scheduled recordings!
