New TV season to start

Well with the end of summer, it is time once again for a line-up change to our TV schedules. We have seen over the years many of our favorite retro shows either added to the lineup or removed. Some shows are just played far too often and others only rarely seen. When I first started with satellite as well as OTA antenna, my favorite channels were the many feeds of RTN (remember Bo) as well as FOX. MeTV now has many of the shows they once played, but others are surely missed. Many clips and shows can be found on the internet at such sites as YouTube but some are of just so poor of video quality. Well this brings the question, what old TV show do you miss.
I miss the old movies but have found Svengoolie on MeTV to fill, well only partially fill that void.

Old TV Shows that I miss are I Love Lucy, (started to get the DVD's). and shows from the 70's like Columbo, Kojak (I was still able to watch it on RTV, before they dropped their Universal Library)

Talking about old shows, I realized that I had never ever before watched The Invaders (a Quinn Martin Production),

started watching on DVD's. this series was from 1967, so it was contemporary with another QM show, The FBI, and also contemporary with shows like Ironside, Mission Impossible, Hawaii 5-0......

Columbo and kojak is on cozi tv. Djdish cozi still has those shows.

It’s About Time with Joe E. Ross. My Mother the Car just to see how bad it was! I get more laughs from Make Room for Daddy late Sunday/early Monday mornings on Cozi than some of the current sitcoms.

MeTV has now posted their new lineup starting September 2nd. Highway Patrol has now made it way to the MeTV network, with Barnaby Jones also showing up.

I actually started watching Barnaby Jones season 1 off my Emby server over the weekend. It’s one of many old series I’ve ripped from dvds. Finding I prefer them as I get older and don’t care as much for modern shows.

Edit: be interesting to see just how much they are edited. The first couple of episodes were both 51minutes on the dvd.

Barnaby Jones was a good show IMO, I bought the DVD's and here's what I can say:

The first season was an official release (by CBS I think?) that first season had the full shows (51-50 minutes long) and greatly remastered.

Then CBS didn't release the rest of the seasons, so one of those companies (can't recall the names but I think of them as semi-pirate)
got the blessing from CBS, but they got their hands on the syndicated episodes, i.e. 46 minutes by episode instead of the original 50-51.

And the picture quality is poor when compared to the greatly remastered Season 1.

I've already watched a bunch of the episodes, and sure most of them you will notice from the beginning that are missing
the Quinn Martin trademark - ACT 1 and immediately after that are also missing the "Executive Producer - Quinn Martin" caption.

However to my surprise every now and then I've found that they were able to get their hands on a full episode, but those are very few
and spread randomly over the what was it 8 seasons.....

Anyway, I identify myself with you, I now treasure those old tv shows, and honestly, I hardly find a new show as interesting and
as good as those old ones, I especially like the Quinn Martin ones, like:

Barnaby Jones
Cannon
Streets of San Francisco
The FBI
The Invaders....

I’ve purchased quite a few old series DVD’s from a Canadian company www.visualentertainment.tv/ and the quality was good. I picked up The Snoop Sisters and Bizarre with John Byner and the late Super Dave. Seems they are able to get the rights for a limited production because Bizarre is no longer available. If you see it and want it better buy it now.

That's the name of the company, yep from Canada, they're the ones who released Barnaby Jones all seasons.

My comment on Barnaby Jones is that the quality of the episodes that they got for seasons 2-8 is really poor when compared
to the remastered quality of the season 1 officially released by CBS.

I've also got me the Snoop Sisters, that was a great short-lived show from the NBC Mystery Movie wheel.

I also got my hands on McMillan and Wife released by them and this show was also from the old NBC Mystery movie line up.

Other than that, and as I was interested in some old shows I had to struggle to get my hands on:

Madigan - Also from the NBC Mystery lineup - Not released in the US, so I got the DVD's from a French company.

McCloud - Not released on DVD in the US, only by an Australian company and a Nordic one, real hard to get, I did some magic to get me
one Australian season, another season from the Norwegian DVD'S, , and the rest from a collector.

Mrs Columbo, - yep, this one not released ever in the US, but I was able to get from a French company that released the full short series.

The Law and Harry McGraw, never released in the US, only in Australia and France, I was able to get the French DVD's

Amy Prentiss - A spinoff from Ironside, the first episode was only released on VHS tape in the UK, I got this one from a collector in the UK.

Other shows that I struggled to get because they've never been released on DVD (unless this has happened in the last year or so):

Christine Cromwell (with Jaclyn Smith) - from the ABC Saturday Mystery Movie (that also featured in its lineup the renewed Columbo and Kojak).
Was able to get the 4 episodes from a collector.

Cool Million another short-lived one from NBC Mystery Movie, got this one from a collector.

Hec Ramsey - also from the first NBC Mystery movie shows, and oh man I think this one was great. not released ever on DVD, not anywhere, I had to get this one from a collector, in very poor quality.

And another one:

The Bold Ones, (from NBC) this one I remember was still aired on RTN (later known as RTV), this one I originally got from a collector, then it was later released on DVD by another one of those companies (that I call semi-pirate), but here's the downside also, I was watching The Senator on the DVD'S released by this company and the episodes are edited, missing about 4 minutes of each episode,

Oh and I just remembered another one:

Get Christie Love - (a short lived one from ABC), which was great IMO, this one if my memory serves me right came out on TV same year as Amy Prentiss (NBC), and Police Woman (NBC), and Charlie's Angels - 1976 if I'm correct that was the year the women took a more prominent role on cop and detective TV shows,

This one never released on DVD's got it from a collector. who recorded it when it was aired on Centric on the anniversary of the show, and to my understanding it has never or very rarely aired again.

My biggest problem with the overseas releases of US shows, is they are usually 25FPS, so the audio is sped up.
The Fall Guy. Season 1 was a proper US Region 1 release. I had the season 2 PAL Region 2 UK release and it sounded terrible with the sped up audio.

The picture, would go crazy every 10 seconds like clockwork, something very weird, like some interference, at first I thought it was a defect on the DVD recording.

DVD wouldn't play on any of my "fine" DVD players,

But I played it then on an old DVD Recorder, and then it played fine, no problems at all.

For those of you interested in the oldies, Decades is starting to broadcast "The Phil Silvers Show" followed by "Car 54, Where Are You" this week. It's showing up at 11:00 PM Pacific Monday night so that's 2 AM Eastern.

Light TV on 91W is broadcasting "My Mother the Car" and "It's About Time" in the early morning hours. I could only watch one episode of each! Now I know why they didn't last.

Petticoat Junction is on Decades 101W at noon eastern. Old black and white are on Zee Living 101W Wednesdays at midnight. They show four shows and the episodes repeat quite often.
