Just joined the forum. I'm looking for info on recommendations for FTA and antenna sizes for SE Alaska? Thanks!

Alaska...oh boy....honestly I don't know
I know most people use 30" for DBS, which has more power than KU band...you might need a 4 footer at least

Hopefully someone closer to Alaska can help out (I'm in MN)
 
Of course you need to be in the footprint of the satellite to start with, would be well worth having a look at Lyngsat, pick a satellite that you are interested in and have a look at the BEAM. See below for the KU beam from G10R....

Look at the EIRP (dBW) for your area then have a look at sadouns link below, seem you would get away with a 75cm dish, but I would go for at least a 1m.

Pete, thanks for the information. Any folks using FTA equipment in Alaska, please chime in! I'm in SE Alaska and looking for info/recommendations on how your reception is in AK. Thanks!
 
I just checked some of the angles and it might be tough. AMC4 at 101 (same spot as DirecTv) is at a 10 elevation from Anchorage...alot of the FTA KU band stuff is east of there
 
Give us your zip for all the angles to the satellites from your area! Never did one for Alsaka :)
 
Thanks guys for the continued help. I did do some research on a couple sites for my location (55.4N 132.5W)...looks like 123W = 26.3 elev., 119W = 25.7, 101W = 20.8, 97W = 19.3, 91W = 16.9 and 87W = 15.0. 87W (AMC-3) might be a tough catch up here at only 15-degrees (?) I haven't done any preliminary Az work yet with a compass from my deck, but do have a good view to the South and S.East. I plan on a multi-dish array and suspect that I will need at least 90-CM antennas at my location. We do get DirecTV here and it is subject to intermittent outages due to weather. You just live with it here in Alaska. Any thoughts on the Pansat 2700 receiver? Thanks!

Looks like your numbers are better than what I pulled up :D

I know people have been able to get down to a 10 degree angle in AK with minor issues. So you should be able to get a fair amount of stuff on KU : )

The Pansat 2700 is good. The 3500 does have a few better features. I know there has been reviews of both in the review section. You could use the Coolsat too.

his true south is Echo 1 & 2 (at 148) :)

That explains why I can get these two sats in Maryland. They are probably too low on the horizon for me to see. I have problems with any sats beyond G10. I can get from PAS9 to Galaxy10. I have never had any success with any sats beyond 123 degrees.

East coast is harder to get the far west ones. I know there have been Dish people trying to get 148 and they had to turn the dish upside down (I think in Kentucky its like a 12 degree angle)
 
I wasn't able to get those two prior to Katrina. There were trees across the street, and I suspected that my roof would also interfere.

The trees across the street are now history, but my roof's still there. Still don't think I can get it. Fortunately, there's very little FTA there. If it had the FTA channels 91w and 119w have, I'd be fighting for it :)
