Just got a channel master 1.0 meter dish of craigslist for free. I saw a post saying these are a decent dish and can be used with modern receivers.

Is this a good dish?
dish info:
channel master 1.0 meter
part # 3040642-02
mold # 1.0M -02

the lnb has a part # of CM3040645

What is a good rcvr?

I was looking at a CW4000 and liked the list of features. will this rcvr work with this dish?

Thanks,
Fub

EDIT: I should add that I am more of a computer person and have experience with linux os, and have been looking into pc card solutions too. If you have any experience with that side of it I would appreciate any recommendations to that as well.

WElcome!

That is a fine dish fot FTA. Does it have a lnb attached? If not a linear lnb is inexpensive.

Read all the FAQ's and familiarize yourself with the jargon, a bit daunting at first..but no more so than shell scripts for linux. Getting your post or mast set perfectly plumb is imperative. Read a pile of posts, and see what others have done before you, why reinvent the wheel.

Most any modern DVB reciever with blind scan will work, I've no personal experiance with CaptiveWorks boxes, but someone will chime in. Same with DVB cards.

May I suggest going for 123W first? A lot of good channels, a good bird to start with.

Let us know your progress...........

I'd suggest you don't have a PCI card solution as an only receiver. Makes it terrible to tune the dish. However, the PCI card solution is hugely flexible and makes a great add-on to a motorized system.
Recommend a Coolsat 5000 or Fortec Mercury II as first receiver. Other recommendations will follow, no doubt.
:)

I ran your lnbf part # in google and it brought me back here:

Looks like its a standard 10750 so you should be all set. Like Brent said, consider getting a stb first, then add the computer card. I did it the other way around and its a real chore setting up a dish with a card, not impossible but the stb makes it so much easier. :)

Almost forgot

:welcome

I'm a big fan of the Coolsat 5000, I have a couple of them, the last I got on Ebay a few months ago for around $35 shipped. It has a nice tuner and very good blind scan. BTW, I forgot to mention in my other post, that Channelmaster makes nice dishes, you lucked into that one, can't do better than free:)
You mentioned you might get a dvb card....I have a Twinhan 1020a pci card that is a good all around card. Its strengths are, it is affordable, its been around a long time so the drivers are mature, meaning the card will work with just about any software, and it has a loop out so you can daisy chain cards or stb's if you ever get into more than one receiver. The downside is it does not do dvb-s2, just dvb-s but it will give you an idea if the dvb card is something you would like for very little money, I"ve seen them on the net for $40.

thanks alot for the prompt and very helpful info everyone! I'm going to start looking for a coolsat 5K on ebay pronto...
