And if you like your dish on the roof, maybe you can leave that one parked on a satellite you enjoy, and have your next system on the ground, motorized to pick up everything else. With these diseqc switches, you can have just about any combination of dishes connected.

I think I am going to leave that one on the roof on 95W, and invest in a switch for sure. My brother-in-law is a district manager for a couple apartment complexes, and he has several old dishes that need to come down from Direct and Dish, so I hit the money pot for KU dishes! LOL I told him I would take them down for free, and he can have his maintenance crew patch holes behind me. I plan to park a dish on 97W, and a couple others once I get my diseqc switch. My dish farm is about to grow very soon!!!

New to FTA starter package suggestions please . . .

Hello good folks,

We live in Las Vegas and enjoy the free digital stations - now we'd like to take the plunge into FTA - I've read and read and read so I know it's not a replacement for dish or direct (which I've never had). I build custom guitars for a living so I love to tinker and am good with electronics and my hands. It would be fun to surf the waves and find all sorts of interesting channels. Currently my condo has a Direct-TV dish on the railing of our porch - which I'll remove - but I've heard I can still use the cables and hookups. I would like suggestions for a package - I'd like something I don't have to upgrade in month - so I want HD, USB, HDMI etc. I appreciate any suggestions you can give me - I live in a complex so I am limited in the size of dish I can use - I'm sure anything 4' or under would be OK. If I am posting on the wrong forum or breaking any rules please except my sincerest apologies. Thanks, N. Smith

The Amiko Mini HD SE is by far the best receiver on the market right now, you get it and it just works like it supposed to. Also has North American support from Joe right here on the forum.
The Dish jmc98 linked is also a very solid dish. Made very well and not flimsy like some of the other ones out there.

The only thing I would add, is don't get to hasty tearing out the old dish. There may be something there that you might want to use with the new dish.

Thanks very much for your help - I appreciate you folks helping me cut through all the confusion. I'll go ahead and purchase the suggested items - is a motor needed for the dish? Thanks again for your help.

A motor is not necessary but it nice to have. Try aiming the fixed dish first before getting a motor to get experience.
