The new SatelliteGuys screen format goes off my screen to the right and makes me scroll over. I'm using a somewhat older resolution of 1024X768. Short of buying a new wide screen monitor (which I will do when this one dies) do any of you have any suggestions.

I'm using the same resolution and have the same problem. It's rather annoying. I guess the only thing we can do is become Supporting Pub Members and make the ads go away.

The proper place for your complaints and comments is in the
SatelliteGuys Operations Center

I am experiencing the same problems.
I don't like it.
The page load time has increased tremendously, too.
I am not sure if there is a random timer associated with the problem, but I discovered something while looking at the page HTML source.

The other thing I noticed, was the outrageous size of each HTML page.
No wonder so much bandwidth and computer horsepower is used!
And for us users, that translates into horsepower to decode and display the pages, making the experience even more fun.
This attitude of "abuse the users" makes me steadfast in my refusal to pay money.

edit:
I suppose the alternative is . . . to go elsewhere.
I've already cut back on my postings, due to the Attachment Display Problem.

Wierd... everything's the right width, and loading fine here. And I'm on a crappy dial-up connection!

Its annoying to me as it's not supposed to be doing that. And unfortunately there is no way to tests the ads but on the live board. If I try doing any of this on a private test site none of the ads display.

As you can tell I have been screwing with the ads for the past week now, trying to figure out the magic combination to increase earnings for the site as we have a $6,300 bill due next month for bandwidth.

The ads were doing good then just stopped working for things that we were earning $1 on we are now earning 30 cents. I was told to move the ads around in order to find the "hotspots" which would help out and bring the earnings up again. So every few days I put some ads up and see how they work. If they dont work then I move them somewhere else trying to find the magic slot.

If I had a choice (or if I won the lottery) there would not be any of the syndicated ads. :)

not all adverts created equal:

Yea, I see the adds. They're fine.
The formatting problem being reported in this thread is this one:

"» Advertising Make these ads go away! Become a Supporting Pub Member Today! "

It came up to the right of the forum posts, pushing everything to the left.
Then it disappeared.
Now, it's on the left, pushing everything to the right.

The actual adverts themselves, embedded in the pages, are only a problem in the bandwidth they use.

No problem with the ads with me, but the new photo display causes the page to freeze or crash at times. Sometimes it just sits on the black screen and even the mouse won't respond until I can get out of it. When my connection is slow I sometimes must use PDA mode.

Ok how about now? :)

The photo display thing is not going to change. It is part of the vBulletin system. I needed to fix our code so that it properly worked under vBulletin 3.8.x code as the code we were running was for 3.6.x.

We needed to upgrade as vBulletin would not support us with tech support until we brought the code up to 3.8.x which meant the photo viewer being made to work. I have been trying to work on an on / off switch for it which users can select.

The screen width issues have improved for me but are still present.

I have taken to sending most of the commercial hosts to localhost. The difference in speed is amazing. I use IE. (There are add-ons for Firefox.)

The proprietor might use www.howardforums.com as a test case study. Howard Chui uses vBulletin also. His site rank in Netcraft is 3512. Somehow that guy pays for his hosting and bandwidth and the pages (including ads) load quickly without all of the invasive scripts that bog things down. (or whatever the issue is...)

With www.satelliteguys.us site rank of 6663 and all of the traffic that implies, one could presume paying for the bandwidth and hosting is doable.

PS.

For a new user it still says:
REGISTER TODAY AND THESE ADS GO AWAY!
Where it says:
You are currently viewing our forums as a guest which gives you limited access

Whereas on the side it says:
Register Today and many of these ads go away!

I get the formatting problems only on 2 systems I use and only with firefox, IE is fine. It's really not a bother if I am not on the homepage.

Unfortunately I dont have the big cell phone companies paying my bills for me like Howard does at his site.

Both Dish and DirecTV have wanted to advertise here directly but i have refused them as I want to keep SatelliteGuys free and allow people to speak their mind. I don't want to risk losing a sponsor because someone said "Dish Network sucks" or "DirecTV sucks" I enjoy being able to report the good and bad about the companies and will not bow to them and start talking only positive about them because they are sponsors.

If you look 75% of our traffic here is Unregistered folks and thats where a majority of our expense on bandwidth goes. Those folks see a lot of ads, I do that not only to pay the bills but to hopefully get them to register and become part of the community.

The registered members see a lot less ads then the unregistered folks as we still need to pay the bills and for those folks who don't like those ads we give them a chance to get rid of them by becoming supporting pub members for $20 a year. Now by my estimates the $20 a year we are actually losing out on ad revenues (well at least we were when the ads were paying higher), but to me thats ok because those folks are active in the community and thats a great thing.

Yes some people use ad blockers, but unfortunately that does not help us and in fact could make features go away for some folks. There are a few scripts out there which can detect the ad blockers and thus will only show them parts of messages and ask them to turn their ad blockers off to see the enitre message. I have looked into those and may have to turn those features on somewhere down the road. Some at that point will leave but if they do they are not going to find the info, news, help and rumors we offer anyplace else and ultimately others will take their place.

But if you do have adblockers in place you have seen how fast our servers really are. :) If you have learned anything here or have saved money because of info you gained from this site I ask that you consider becomeing Pub Members.

As I have said before if I could I would have no syndicated ads here at all, but with the economy being as it is the ad dollar is down 70% from where it was a few short months ago. And while the ad economy sucks our ISP dosent care and wants their money. :)

And thats where we are today. :)

I still have the problem with both Internet Explorer and FireFox. If you draw a vertical line down from the "E" at the end of PDA MODE, everything to the right of that line is cut off and I have to scroll over to see it.
