Wanted to say hello to everyone. I also have a couple questions. I had my Dish Network installed this past Sunday. So far I am happy with the service. Two things that I am wondering about though (and maybe you guys can point me in the right direction). I am an avid SPEED CHANNEL viewer. I do not see SPEED offered in HD for Dish (though I know it is for DirectTV). Will Dish be picking up SPEED in HD in the near future?? Also, I live just outside Savannah, GA and as of now the local HD's are not active. Is there a way to find out when they will become active?? I know DirectTV has these as well. Thanks!

Actually, the answer to both is the same if you ask Dish, SOON!

In reality, Speed is owner by Fox and Fox and Dish are in a legal battle over the location of Fox News in their tiers. Dish agreed to place it in the lowest tier, and then reneged on the deal and Fox sued them. Because of this, Dish has not, and likely will not add Fox News HD, Fox Business (SD or HD), FX HD, or Speed HD until the legal dispute is settled. In the meanwhile, we all suffer. They could settle tomorrow, or it could go out years, it is anyones guess.

As for locals, I will let someone from the area give you the projection, however, Charlie has not really been living up to his promises lately, so who knows.

Thanks for the reply Aries. I did not know that about Dish/Fox. That's not-so-good news. As for the locals, if there is anyone in/near my area that knows of any news on when they may become available please let me know! It looks like what I may do for now is put in a dual outlet in the wall and run another cable down for my Comcast (they used the existing Comcast coax running down the wall from the attic for the Dish Net. when they installed it) and hook it back up to the TV so that I can watch my locals in 1080 through them. Should'nt be too hard to do.

Dumb question for all the installers around here, using Cable Co Coax is not to spec is it? Isn't that the difference between RG6 and RG54?

I assume as a new sub, I assume you have a new MPEG4 box, why not save yourself the trouble (and cost of Comcast service) and just plug an OTA antenna to the box? (you will get HD locals that way) If your box is in the basement or something like mine is where you cannot get OTA reception, why not place an antenna in the attic and run the cable down? I would still think this would be less expensive in the long run, just a thought, not sure of your particualr situation.

Hall's...

question is a good one! Regarding Comcast locals...might be a better way to go for locals, what $15 a month. You'll probably get the sub channels that DISH doesn't provide, as well as Weatherscan (local) and PBSHD subchannels.

Hate to ask, but why didn't you go with DirecTV instead of Dish ?

Not enough research I suppose. Though, I was under the impression from the cust. service rep that I spoke with that the local HD's were available...as well as SPEED HD. She said, "if it's offered in HD, then you'll have it". Then, after having everything installed on Sunday and searching through all my channels and calling Dish Net. I find out that SPEED is not in HD and local HD's are not avail. in my area. But what can I do now???

That was why I had mentioned just running my Comcast down to the TV as well and putting a dual outlet in the wall. So then I could just go to my cable to watch the local DTV channels that my tv picks up in 720, 1080, etc. I have Comcast internet and basic tv.

This has me interested. I'm curious as to which antenna I would need? I would like for it to be mounted inside somewhere. Here is what it showed me was avail. when I put in my address (from Crutchfield's website)...

You have some amount of time to "change your mind", I think, but more importantly, in this case, you were mis-lead (some would say lied to).

There's been talk of Speed HD for a long time. End result is, it's not available today. You'll hear the word "soon" thrown around a lot by people here, myself included. Basically, believe it when you see it (in your program guide and can watch the channel) !

As for Savannah locals, there's a list of planned cities but I don't know if Savannah is on it.

I agree...

with Hall. It appears that you were misled. If I were you I'd get on the phone and get the service cancelled, without any penalty fees. The specific channel you wanted is not available...you were led to believe that it was, and in addition no HD locals, that other providers have in their system. Don't let them badger you either. Stick to your guns...sometimes endurance is necessary.

IF you live within 25 miles from your broadcast towers you can use the terk 44 clip on atenna. I have used one for about 8 years now and it works like a charm. I use the dish 1000.2 sat dish + a side sat for 61.5 . My parents use one also and it works for them just fine with their similar dish setup. A lot of people who hate Terk products will say that they are crap to work with . I call these people either TERK snobs or people who live in an area where they can't use the terk, due to distance from the towers. I love them and it was easy to install and the diplexors make it easy to take one coax and split it to two coaxes that they provide , and then use the dish seperator to split the sat side into two more coaxes for dual tuner satellite use. I use the tv side feed to a splitter and use it for my tv, sat receiver & any other device that needs antenna. I will say it again; IF you live within 25 miles from the broadcast towers it should work just fine.

Any antenna that you can hook to the back of an HDTV w/ built in tuner will work. If you can get reception over the air on your TV with an antenna, you will be able to just hook an antenna up to the DishNetwork receiver and pull in the HD stations (keep in mind you will need to change the necessary settings in your receiver menu). You can use any antenna you find a Wal-Mart to do it and do not need anything special, however, powered antennas can help amplify a weak Over The Air signal. You can put the antenna whereever you want. I recommend this assuming you are just keeping Comcast for your locals. If you are keeping it for other reasons, that is up to you.

As for what you have been told by Dish, it sounds like you were lied to (or whatever you call it when a completely uninformed CSR makes something up without knowing it to be factually correct.) Hall and others are likely right that you are within your rights to call and cancel. Just depends on how much you like the service. Dish has ticked me off royally in the last year with CSR issues and removing Voom, my favorite HD Channel Suite, however, all in all, I still very much like their service, eventhough I do not get Speed, Fox News, or FX in HD. I do not like DirectTv's DVR and my only other option is Charter Communications, which I refuse to do, so Dish it is for now.........unless one of the two gets Voom.

i don't think you want that antenna. you seem to be 20 miles from the towers so you might be able to get a good channel master antenna in your attic. i use the 4228 in my attic and i can get the locals that are 20 miles out. outside would be best though if you have a good spot for one.

This site will help you point your over the air antenna.

AntennaWeb

I have used an OTA in the past for HD, one of the smaller Terks and it was fine. Currently getting my locals over the SAT.

Well, I decided to just go ahead and cancel the service. Had it shut off yesterday. Waved the term. fee. Called DirectTV last night and placed my order (I'll have local HD and Speed HD now). They're coming out next Wed. to install. Pricing was w/in $10/mo of Dish. Plus the first year I will be paying alot less and getting more. For now I've just hooked my Comcast 2-76 channel cable back up for the next week. Thanks for all the help guys. I really do appreciate it!
