They look great, but I have a 10.5” iPad that is currently working great.
No OLED on the new iPad and I think it will be few more years before they bring in OLED to the iPad due to pricing.

Overall I like the design but the pricing is killer, it’s crazy you can buy a small Mac laptop for less than an iPad!

Our iPad 3 is still trundling along just fine.

Being able to plug in a flash drive without having to use some silly adapter moves the iPad much closer to being a computer replacement. Pros can't be expected to move gigabytes of data back and forth to cloud storage.

I think Apple knows that the Surface has set a high bar for ultralight computers and Microsoft will be eating their lunch until they counter it.

Don't need to use the cloud. I use wifi direct with a files transfer app. You select the files in the app and then it gives you an IP address you bring up in your browser on your PC to download the files. To get large 4K video files off my iphone XS Max, I just plug the iphone into the USB port of my windows 10 PC and then right click on the USB device and select "import media" from the menu. No apps needed.

Alas, you may not want to be carrying your WIndows 10 PC (or Mac with lots of mass storage) everywhere you want to load or unload files. USB C is much faster than almost any Wi-fi connection.

For what you pay for an iPad Pro, it shouldn't require a computer to support it and Apple seems kinda uppity about giving users direct access to storage from the iOS end. It took them a surprising stretch of time to implement USB mass storage for downloading rather than being forced to use iTunes to download content off the device.

I agree that the tablet devices are mostly useless to me with a few exceptions. That is why I still carry a Surface Pro with my travels. I still carry my ipad Air 2 as well, but rarely use it. The Surface Pro running windows 10 is robust enough for my needs away from home. I have Edius, Vegas Pro, and Premiere Pro as well as photoshop on it for field quick edits.

But, back to your concern, the iphone and ipad can do some transfer of files with V30 microSD card speed direct from a GoPro camera, and other cameras. I say "cameras" because I can't think of any other files that qualify and large enough that speed is important. There are adapters that you can buy that connect to your iphone or ipad that allow for USB, MicroSD, SD card and chargers so you can do long transfers from other devices for video files. There are some tricks to make them work, such as knowing that iOS requires a DCIM folder on the device to see the image files. iOS will only recognize the standard iOS video formats, but fortunately, there aren't many cameras today that don't use standard formats including RAW and HEVC. So we're all good. What I like is being able to plug in a GoPro Hero6 and watch video files on an ipad 10 inch screen. The other trick is you have to make sure the adapter with the lightning plug is MFI certified or the i-device won't see it. Unfortunately, there are many counterfeit lightning plug cables that are not. You just have to get the right tool for the job.

I just ordered a GoPro Hero 7 so I hope it also works as well.

I can't address that because I'm more a PC guy but respect the advantages that Apple as offered. My history in i-devices only dates back to the iphone 5 when my wife switched from Blackberry to iphone forced by her employer making the switch at Wells Fargo. Prior to that I did own a MacBook Pro for a short time to satisfy a client who insisted I do his project on Final Cut. I sold it to him when the project was complete. I hated everything about Mac video editing but the pay was good. Windows 10 seemed to be more Apple friendly in connection of the iphone than prior windows. Now I just connect that iphone to USB 2.0 and transfer to my m.2 storage. I have not tried the USB-C to Lightning connection yet, although I have the cable. I will try that on my next project.

Going to still check out the new iPad at the Apple store but not really buying, my 10.5 64gb I got it from target last year for around $500 since they price matched Best Buy.

My friend in AZ has an iPad 4 (basically the iPad 3 with the Lightning port) and Apple stopped updating iOS for it, so navychop's iPad 3 would in the same boat. He's been putting off his iPad replacement until the Oct. 30 announcement and has the 12.9" iPad Pro on order. I'm not sure how much storage he ordered since I was in the air during the Apple event and I'm still catching up. I expect I'll be visiting the local Apple Store next week to check all the new goodies out...

I saw this Wireless USB-C dongle that turns your iPad into a second screen for your Thunderbolt 3 Mac (there's also a MiniDisplayPort model for older Macs.) That could be a compelling argument to get the new iPad and have another use for it other than being just an iPad. Luna Display

My wife uses the ipad 3 for her digital newspaper subscription and a few other things. It's fine and no need to upgrade. I have the air 2 and it works too but I rarely use it. I didn't even check out the new Apple presentation the other day. We still have the original ipad I bought when they first came out and my grandson plays some games on it. Just can't kill these things.

SWMBO says her iPad 3 does everything she wants, as fast as she wants, and has no battery issues.

Mostly, she does genealogy work on it. While watching TV. While eating. While getting ready for bed. While awake and not actually at work....

I'd love the new iPad Pro, but my Pro 10.5 really works great, only issue is battery isn't as strong, but still, I never run out of juice.

It was one thing to splurge on a new iPhone, but to add $949+100+100 for a ipad, new pencil, and case, gets in laptop range.

I’ve got a first gen 12.9” iPad Pro, an iPad mini 4 and a 2017 iPad cellular. All work just fine for what I need so I’ll take a pass this year too.

The new iPad pros look really good, but are really overkill for anything I would do with them.

I was at a BB today. Played with the 11 and 12.9 Pro. Wow. So light, it's crazy. The screen was very nice, definitely an improvement over the screen on my 10.5. But really about the same size, only nominally bigger. And while a much smaller bezel, not edge to edge like the XS Max. If that ipad had OLED I'd be all over it. Did not check out the new pencil.

Yeah, I figure if I stay away from the Apple Store for the next few months I may be able to walk in without walking out with one of everything...:)

Yeah, and I wish I had not read about the new mac mini. I have a nice 24" 4k monitor that would work really well with that. I have the keybaord, the magic track pad, all I need is that little mini.

And a new iPad. :D

Bought two ipad bargains yesterday for the grandkids Christmas gifts. $249. Wife saw them at Walmart and I found the same deal on Amazon Prime so we saved a little more with the Prime deal and Amazon cash back card. :)

Both have been wanting ipads for over a year now.

We were at my in-Laws for the holiday and I noticed the iPad Air 2 he picked up for $275 last Black Friday had been dropped onto a corner and the screen was a fine series of cracks radiating our from the corner. He has a case on it, but it's one of those that doesn't cover the corners (?) and so it offered no real protection in this particular fall. I pointed out the Target, Walmart, etc. $249 prices but he seems okay with living with it for now. He did check on a replacement screen, $199 was quoted from the computer store he likes.

Good point, Roland. I will suggest my daughter get them some cases.
I see Amazon is already sold out and raised the price to $299 for Dec 10 delivery.

I hadn't paid too close attention to the new ipads and was surprised that it now supports the pencil and keyboard. I'm even more pleased with the decision now.

I was in at the Apple Store over the past weekend and finally got my hands on the new iPad Pro models. I know the new 12.9" unit has the same footprint as the previous iPad Pro, but dang! That thing's huge! I played around with it for a little bit and if I wasn't using it as a Pro device (i.e., content creation, editing photos and videos, etc.) I don't know how comfortable I would be with it. The 11" unit felt a lot more manageable in my hands.

I'm not sure what to make of Apple's relative blasé attitude toward the warped iPad Pros being delivered to customers. From MacRumors: Apple's Dan Riccio Says 2018 iPad Pro 'Meets or Exceeds' Quality Standards of Design and Precision, More Info to Come

These are not units getting bent by the customer, these are coming with a warp right out of the package. Like someone said in the comments, spending over a thousand dollars for a device that is visibly warped isn't acceptable. Almost to the point of opening it in the store and checking it before leaving so you don't have to end up bringing it back. It would be nice to see a percentage on this warping, too.

We bought the two grandsons, ages 10 and 7, their own ipads. Different colors of course. Santa also bought them the Logitech keyboards and Apple pencil. They also got some sturdy case system that protects everything. I just got an email from the 10 year old who has invited me to accompany him to his first Apple store class on his ipad and pencil. It's a 90 minute session. They are so excited. The 10 year old begins his first class in school on using an ipad to do reports, research, wikipedia, searches etc. My daughter has the jump on this because when she was teaching elementary 2 years ago this is the class she taught to second graders. My grandson said I need to attend these classes with him so I can keep up. LOL! He said I will like it because I can learn iMovie which is part of the class. This may be fun. :D So Don is going Back to School. I think I should watch the movie with Rodney Dangerfield now.
