New Install - How to assure getting the International Dish, the SWM-16 and a 5-LNB!!

Yes, that is EXACTLY what D* calls it. It's NOT listed as a prog pkg on the "main" part of the website, but if I go into my account on-line, it IS a valid add-on that is listed under "my international channels". (but anyone else w/out a base spanish pkg can add it as well) You might have to go through a CSR or two that knows about it, but trust me, it DOES exist.
****
Same reason why there's some SonicTap music on 119 - because that's the way D* choose to do it. There's also actually a few other free TV channels on 119 that are available to anyone with any base pkg as well. Some are spanish only, but you do NOT need a spanish pkg to get them.
****
Trust me on this one - you AIN'T gonna get HOPE or JWTV w/out a 5LNB - they absolutely, positively, ARE on 119. But, I've only been doing satellite for over 22+ years, starting back on the BUD's. (before D* & E* existed)

Thank you again!

1. Thanks for the confirmation on the name of the package

2. So, my question is why can I not force the issue to get the 5lnb since I can't get everything they list as included in my package without seeing 119????? Paying $15 for a month or two isn't the end of the world to assure I get a 5lnb.....but honestly....I shouldn't HAVE to....should I? You'd think they'll pull it off the channel list if people getting the default 3lnb install don't get them.

So, on my call later today or Monday morning.....

1. Add a std receiver (or 2) to get my tuners to "9" (or 10) to assure a swm-16

2. Add "en espanol" to assure a 5lnb installation...even though I shouldn't HAVE to.

....then pray I get a decent technician. :)

I never said you couldn't - YOU asked "Is there a better way to assure I get that LNB installed at the time of install at no extra cost?" And I told you how...
You are certainly free to try & "push the issue" - but frankly, I don't think it's likely to happen - but if you give it a shot, let us know how you fair... ;) ;)

Paying $15 for a month or two isn't the end of the world to assure I get a 5lnb.....but honestly....I shouldn't HAVE to....should I?

Don't disagree w/you...

You'd think they'll pull it off the channel list if people getting the default 3lnb install don't get them.

Well hate to tell you this, but they were doing it this way even back when they were using the P3 oval dishes. (way before the slimlines even existed) They used to put tiny disclaimers in their ads saying something to the effect "channel counts are based on use of a triple LNB dish" - which again, most people did NOT get for free.

1. Add a std receiver (or 2) to get my tuners to "9" (or 10) to assure a swm-16

Since an SD DVR only costs $99 for a full lease purchase, I'd go with an extra DVR - then that way, you're actually adding TWO more tuners on ONE box. BTW, I believe that since you are getting MRV, you might actually get a HD DVR for the price of an SD DVR! (since R15/16's SD DVR's will NOT do MRV - make sure you tell them you want ALL your DVR's shared... ;) ;) )

2. Add "en espanol" to assure a 5lnb installation...even though I shouldn't HAVE to.

Yep - again, you can cancel it after 1 month. Do NOT cancel any earlier though, as then you'll get hit with a $10 cancelation fee, for not keeping add-on prog for at least 1 month. ;)

I will absolutely be doing the "en espanol" thing. I through the HOPE, etc on 119 just in case someone chimed in on their success with that route. It's certainly worth ~$15 to make sure.

As for the SD-DVR idea.....I agree with you. The truth being though, I already have a $500+ install bill based on $500 worth of HD-DVRs ($0+$100+$200+$200) and the $25 internet installation service. I bit the bullet on all HD-DVRs since I am getting 40% cash back, like the idea of the of the fastest receivers available (assuming probably getting HR24 compared to buying older used *owned* receivers), having plenty of "tuners" and storage available, forcing the SWM-16 install, etc. I really didn't want to pay any more then $525 - $210 = $315 for receivers I don't even own.

As for the FREE SD receivers, they'll either be returned shortly or replaced with an owned box. I will be having a family member moving in with my wife and I, so we may actually NEED 5 receivers instead of just using it to get a SWM-16. I actually wouldn't mind getting an owned HR20 to get another OTA tuner in the MRV mix. So I'll probably hold on to the SD receiver until that happens.

UPDATE: I just won an HR20 on ebay for $29.99 + $15 s/h. :) :)

Think I may still add that SD receiver on the order so that the order has 9 tuners....and when they arrive, ask them if they can just install an owned one instead and still install the SWM-16. If they say no, then I'll let them install the SD box and then send it back shortly there after.

Does all that make sense? :)

Thanks for your time dishrich!

there is no such thing as an "owned" box unless its really old

They're still leased but instead of getting it through D* its through a retailer. When I "bought" a R22 on Ebay new it was still considered leased through D*

If I decide to buy another receiver from a retailer before my install do I need to call Direct and let them know or just wait for the installer to show up for the install?

Don't think it would matter, I would talk to the installer about it when he gets there.
He may or may not call your box in to activate, other wise you'll have to call in and activate it yourself.

Or you could just wait and set it up once he's gone.

If it's a new installation and you have another room you'd like RG6 run to, maybe the tech would be nice enough to run the cable for you for that owned receiver. I don't know the answer for this, but I wouldn't think it would hurt to call in and say that you have an additional receiver that you need to have installed....so the technician knows and will hopefully install it like the other receivers you ordered directly.

************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

UPDATE: I called into DirecTV and added "en espanol" at $14.99/mo and a 5th receiver, a free std receiver. No problem at all. The rep was surprised she could do it because everyone she's ever talked to has made the mistake of submitting their rebate online right away. The changes were reflected on my online order summary immediately. Of course there are no details concerning the SWM-16 or anything like that. Though the 36" international dish was reflected on the order after my addition of the $4.99/mo MYX Filipino station.

So, keep that in mind.....do not submit your rebate online until you know you will not make any changes to programming, packages or promotions. I learned my lesson by ordering, submitting the online rebate immediately, and having to cancel and reorder service to make changes (including the free HD for life which was introduced days after my original order). Do submit it before your install though to assure your discounts are on your first bill.

My order summary.

Programming

CHOICE ULTIMATE $68.99/mo
MYX $4.99/mo (triggered the 36" international dish install)
en espanol $14.99/mo (assures the 5lnb installation instead of the 3lnb)

Receivers

4x HD-DVRs $0 $100 $200 $200
1x SD $0 (to put me at 9 tuners to get the SWM-16 multiswitch)

(keep in mind, there are cheaper ways to get 9 tuners (like sd-dvrs, etc).....but I wanted 4 HR24s....which of course isn't guaranteed)

Service Fees

TV Internet Installation Service $25 (of course a DirecTV csr said this would guarantee HR24s. Doubt that is true.)

I'm waiting one more day to submit my online rebate.....JUST IN CASE!

Thanks everyone for helping me though this. It's one thing to guess on how things to work...it's nice to get verification.

Couldn't tell you what every line means.....maybe someone else can decipher it. Not that we need to know, but it's always nice to know, like the VirtualTAOS144, VirtualTAOS141 and that 12mo $10 mail in rebate.

I do have a referral on this order from my friend with DirecTV, which appears to be reflected in the order.

Obviously some lines don't reflect the true costs, like the additional receiver fees, etc. This list may change once I submit my online rebate to reflect those discounts...not sure.

I agree, most of them out there are leased. New box or not. Just got off the phone with DirecTV. He looked up the HR20-100S I bought and yes....

It was OWNED and said no problems activating it on a new account! :) He said just have it there for the install tech and he'll have a new access card to put in int. I sent the PayPal money off and he's shipping it today and will be here ready for my install on the 1st!

That will give me my OTA tuner for the house plus I'm going to throw a large hard drive inside it, since I own it.

SWEETNESS!

Incorrect. Hate to burst your bubble, but techs do not carry blank access cards with them (unless this changed within 6months as I now work for comcast) and the tech will also probably not install this box for you as he will not get paid for it without adding it to your workorder, and even adding a box that is customer owned, will charge you a one time fee to actually hook up the box/run the line. But back to the card, i would bet a small amount of money the tech is going to tell you you have to have directv mail you a new access card that they will have to pair to that receiver before it can be installed. (in the event you were to agree to pay for the installation of this box) the box cannot be added to the work order without it having a matching access card. And directv will not be able to mail you a card for that box prior to you having a finalized account (not pending due to install). So my honest tech opinion is that you will be selfinstalling this box at a later date, or calling for an upgrade. Another question no one asked you yet, are any lines run to rooms where you want receivers? if so are they rg6? if not, do you want the new lines wall fished? (this is an extra cash fee at the time of install, and not all techs will do it)

Not to scare you, but with the amount of work techs are given in a particular time frame, if this was not my only job of the day, or if every line was not preran to a central place, i would be looking for any reason to burn your install..

Sorry, just my honest opinion as a former directv tech.

However as a currect directv customer (while working for comcast), i have a similiar setup at my new apartment, altho I had to buy alot of equipment myself and set stuff up, and call the local hsp (since i used to work there) and say the house was all ready lit up, just come with my boxes. They sent the 40' supp out to qc 'my' install, then pushed the install for later that nite.

Good luck to you, and be sure to post back with any questions, i will do my best to give you a tech perspective.

And you may be wondering why a tech would be trying to burn your job, well the amount of money I would be paid to complete your install would not be worth my time and the amount of supplies used. If you do get a good tech, please be sure to tip him well. If you get a contractor, well good luck on that one..

That's what I get for listening to the DirecTV customer service representative who was also a former technician concerning the owned box install.

I didn't care and wasn't going to ask him to run a line for this one (as this was not part of the order and would be receiver #6 anyways). I've always worked well with technicians that did installs before (Dish Network and VOOM) and took care of them for extra work done. Many years ago I did my DirecTV install myself (except I had the DISH guy put up my DirecTV dish and point it when he did his install months before I actually bought DirecTV equipment).

I realize who I get for a technician and the amount of "work" he's actually willing to do is a bit of a crap shoot. Not sure if this is a standard response, but the automated D* install confirmation call stated my install should take about 5:30 hrs.

I have RG6 runs in some of the rooms that will be getting DirecTV, but they will all be wired to DISH switches and receivers so he doesn't try to use those runs. I may decide to have both services again at some point and those lines were installed by DISH for DISH...end of story.

Since, based on my order, the install will entail a 5lnb dish and an international, 5 leased receivers, all the DECA and MRV stuffs, I would assume he's getting more from Directv then if I was only getting one or two receivers and a standard one dish install.

I have easy access from the attic to the walls that need runs...and the attic as very easy access to the "wiring room", that it will be quicker and easier to do that then to run @#&$* cables around the outside of the house. There was one room that VOOM and DISH did have to run outside as I couldn't come up with an easy path....and those will be reused.

Bottom line: My main concern is getting the hardware I want with the install....

HR24s - Like I said before, it's on my work order too, no HR24, no install. So, if he wants to get out of doing it, he can just bring a pile of HR21s.

SWM-16 - 9 tuners on my order, not much of a choice there

5LNB primary dish - Spanish programming package, no choice there

International dish
- MYX on my order, no choice there

The filters and adapters to get my owned HR20 working with the MRV
- I expected a possible challenge here. Not sure the process for bill back to D* items required to finish the install. Might see if I can call in and officially get it on the order (even if just as a comment to the technician), since the first rep I talked too was obviously clueless . :) Again, not for runs, but so he'll at least leave the DECA adapter, a BSF, a compatible 1x2 splitter, and two coax jumper cables....since the HR20 is a special beast

Getting some new runs for free
- Ok, this one might be more difficult if he's too lazy to do it the right way which might be 10% harder maybe then running around my house. If we can't come to an agreement, maybe I'll just have him leave a bunch of cable and let him tap the DISH lines to get the install done. Seriously, I just saw it done with my zoned HVAC install with thermostat wiring fished from the wiring room to the walls that needed them.....I can't imagine drilling though walls and tucking wire can be much quicker or easier.

That's why I never considered being an installer, I like to do work based on quality...doing it right...not done the speed in which it is done.

From what I've been told from someone that worked door to door selling DirecTV locally, most of the installs not sold by them were installed from technicians from the twin cities, a good hour away. Not sure how thrilled they are about driving down here.

Anyways, that about it. I appreciate your perspective.

I'm scheduled for a new install like the OP. The breakdown of my order shows the $3 charge for Whole-Home DVR and a tag for MRV Install. It does not include the $25 charge for TV Internet connection.

Is that something I need to add or is it optional for whole-home DVR?

I called in and a CSR told me the order wasn't correct, transferred me to sales and they said the MRV Install tag was sufficient.

Is there any site that shows what that TV internet connection does? When looking at the D* site it links me to my account where I can't order it anyway since my original work order is pending.

I'm setting it up to share between 1 HD DVR and 1 HD non-dvr.

Thanks

Hello Mike,

Well, a couple reasons why it's on my order.

1. You can have MRV without internet access. I assumed that if I didn't add that to my order, that they would "network" the receivers together via DECA, but not connection them to the internet.

2. A DirecTV customer service rep assured me that adding the TV Internet Connection Service that I would for sure get HR24s. Not that I believed him.

3. Figured it was worth it to that to MAKE SURE my receivers are connected to the internet and that maybe it will help assure I get HR24s.

If you HAVEN'T SUBMITTED YOUR REBATE, they can change the order however you need it to be. If you HAVE submitted your rebate, you may have to cancel and reorder if you want to make changes.

I'd say call and ask to make sure, but the lessons have been learned here that not all CSRs know what they are talking about.

SWEETNESS!

That's a lie, on a new install a tech cannot add customer owned boxes unless god changes the work order, it's going to be a charge to you.

Ummmmm......GOD doesn't really help.

Can a CSR change my work order to add that unit? I haven't submitted my rebate yet so my order can still be modified.

********

OMG! The incompetency of some DirecTV customer service representatives is absolutely inexcusable! (Stonecold excluded of course) Over and over again though this process I've had to come here for the REAL answer. I would assume DirecTV training is to blame.

Thanks for the quick reply..

Is the $25 charge for an actual device they are adding to the install or are they just plugging my receivers to my router, which could be done on my own.

I did already submit the rebates so it looks like I'll be calling back tomorrow to cancel and sign up again. I'd imagine doing so won't cause problems for getting rebates on the 2nd attempted account..

I had called in to set up the account because i did need an international dish for Brazilian programming and since I had to call in instead of sign up online they made me pay the S&H.

It is a DECA adapter plus the power supply if I'm not mistaken (plus the installation). Worth more then the $25, then it's installed and working when this leave.

You should have no problem with the online rebate resubmissions. I'm just waiting until the last minute to submit mine. Actually will do by the end of today since my install in on Thursday. I was able to call in, cancel, and order again online just hours after the call....probably could have done it even sooner.

Definitely do you order online, save the $20 shipping, then call in to add the international programming. That's how I did it.

I sent you a PM too.

I don't know if anyone cares or wants to compare notes as to what their pending order looks like online...but I figured I'd post it just in case.

Here is what my full order looks like after the rebate submission the day before my install!!!!! Details of what I ordered are noted earlier in this thread.

So just two line additions to reflect my rebate submission...so my discounts will reflect on my first bill.

Still, no one can decipher what some of these mean? Not even Stonecold??

Not that we need to know, but it's always nice to know, like the VirtualTAOS144, VirtualTAOS141 and what is that other 12mo $10 mail in rebate. The oddities like the double free lifetime HD and the like. Anyways, I'm just curious.

Ummmmm......GOD doesn't really help.

Can a CSR change my work order to add that unit? I haven't submitted my rebate yet so my order can still be modified.

OMG! The incompetency of some DirecTV customer service representatives is absolutely inexcusable! (Stonecold excluded of course) Over and over again though this process I've had to come here for the REAL answer. I would assume DirecTV training is to blame.

Stone Cold is NOT a SERVICE REP
