Hello!

I recently switched from Direct to Dish for the Hopper.

My current setup is a Hopper, and 2 Joeys. So far I am loving it, everything is hooked up online and with a HIC. I had everything ready for the tech when he came, all he had to do is hookup the node and put in the units. He was in and out in under an hour :)

I have no complaints about the system itself, my main question is the HD Quality.
I noticed most of the HD channels are very grainy, and not near the quality as that of Direct. Is this a limitation of the Hopper system/ Moca? Or is it Dish transmitting the channels in a lower bandwidth?

Thanks! Overall tho, I am pretty happy :)

As said above, make sure your settings are correct.

That said, the "general consensus" is that Directv does offer slightly better HD picture quality.
In my experience this holds true.
Some however do not notice it, or find it to be minimal.

This particular subject has been beaten to death, however, since you are new, I'll be easy on you. The general consensus is that on most channels D* and E* are similar in picture quality, however some say if you look hard enough, D* has a slight edge in PQ, but it's very subtle.

You should probably check your TV/receiver settings.

Another vote to check your settings, Dish for some reason has 480 as the default setting not 1080. I think the picture quality with the Hopper is better than my old 722k and looks better than some relatives Direct.

There have been other recent D* to Hopper swiched users who have reported the Hopper PQ to be on par or maybe even a bit better than D*, so who knows. Agreed that it's probably a 480 setting.

I would agree with the above to check settings, I recently changed to dish from direct and I think pq is equal

I will have them hooked up side by side for a day or so, so I will be able to give ya a good review on it.
I know when I had dish in the past with D* as well, that on HD, D* was just better. It was not a huge difference IMO, but side by side it was noticeable. Probably not it they were not side by side.

In any case, both are good, so check those settings, and you will find that is your most likely culprit.

Thanks guys, I will check that when I get home. I am pretty sure that was the first thing I checked, but I will verify when I get home. I don't remember which show I was watching, but it was a dark scene, and when light hit the walls you could see pixels everywhere. I am not nitpicking, but even my wife was like why does the picture look so bad?

When I switched to the Hopper, I kept D* turned on for a while before I had it shut off. I had both connected to the same tv on different inputs. I switched between the Hopper and HR22 back and forth looking for differences. The picture was very similar. Both very good. I would think the hopper looked a little better on one channel, then change the channel andthought maybe HR22. Hopefully you just have a setting wrong.

If the H/J & TV settings are all OK, check the fittings for tightness, damage or sloppy work. Barrel connectors are often a problem if not rated for 3GHz. Most connectors in wall plates are not so rated.

Remote or receiver problem??
