Hi,

Just posting a first message as requested at signup. (Actually I first posted this in ChitChat)

New here. Don't know much about this stuff but just trying to see if I can figure out if I can use a new-old DirecPC dish & LNB (G3R Enabled) to receive legal, free tv and what is involved in setting it up if I can. If this stuff is usable (which further reading of these forums has suggested they are) then what is the least I should expect to pay for a receiver just to get my feet wet? Suggestions?

Thanks folks.

Welcome! :welcome

The DirecPC dish will be a great dish for FTA. If you don't want to spend much money, Ebay has many deals on very capable used FTA MPEG2 receivers. Example: often will see Fortec Star Lifetime Ultras for $50 -$75.

Make sure that the receiver that you purchase has Power (Blind) Scan feature which allows all available channels to be automatically be placed in your channel list without needing to input each transponders parameters.

To get familiar with the receiver, leave the dish pointed at G3R and scan for the few available channels. Once you feel comfortable with the operation of the receiver, start aiming the dish at other satellites and scan.

I might add that you can buy excellent equipment from SatelliteAV (click on banner at top of page or highlighted name at left) they are one of the forum's gold sponsors.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll go hunt down a receiver and I think I have the rest of the parts. Hope to try this all out in the near future.

I appreciate the fast responses.
