I have a 3 way switch in my house that has never worked correctly. It would always work on only the first switch and never the second. Now I have it so it will turn the light on and off from both switches but when one is on the other will not turn the lights off. So if switch 1 is on the lights will be on but switch 2 will not turn the lights off and vice versa. I have included 2 pics of both switches and a pic of how they are wired.

Your wiring schematic is wrong, BTW. The "hot" from the mains should go to the common on the first SPDT switch. The black and the red wires run from the poles on the first switch to the poles on the 2nd SPDT switch. From there, the black (hot) and white (neutral) wires run to the light socket(s).

The wiring shown in the pictures is correctly done.

The "hot" wire should go to the black screw on the first switch, and the "hot" to the lightbulb should go to the black screw on the second switch.

The black & red wire connection between the switches should be done using the non-black screws.

The schematic could be clearer (the first one is depicted as reversed from the actual switch), but the poles are on top of each, and that's how he has it wired.
