I finally took the plunge and signed up for HD. The installer will be coming this Thursday, 9/18/08. I currently have a 322 and a 522. Is it safe to assume all that will be done is a swap of the 522 with the 722 and replacement if the Dish 500 with the Dish 1000?

Depending on where you live and line of sight issues, it is possible they will keep your 500 dish for the 110 and 119 satellites and add another dish for the 61.5 satellite. If you were told you will receive a 1000 dish for the 110, 119, and 129 satellites, that's probably what you'll get as long as there is line of sight. As for receivers, it depends what you agreed to. Did you agree to a single 722 to replace the 522 and to keep the non HD 322 receiver as well?

I currently have two dishes actually. I forget which is which, but the one pointing SW is the main one and the other one only has two of the local channels on it. Line of sight shouldn't be an issue. Yep, I'm getting the 722. I could've got the 622 for $100 or the 722 for $125. It was kind of a no-brainer to go with the 722 as it gives me almost double the amount of recording time for $25. And yes, I'm keeping the 322 as I have 4 tv's.

If you are keeping the 322 in the same rooms and backfeeding the 722 to the same rooms as your old DVR, then yes, all they should have to do is replace a Dish and swap out your receiver.... assuming everything is up to code, expect 1-1.5 hours (most of the time being playing the entertainment center game trying to unplug and plug things in inside of cramped spaces.... believe it or not I think I spend more time doing that than putting up Dishes and running lines outside the house)... and waiting for Check Switches, Software Downloads, Activation, Reboots and Program Guide updating.

Also, some things in your system might need to be "brought up to code".... so it could be a bit longer if wall plates and/or barrels and fittings need to be replaced. That is assuming the installer gives a crap about those things.

Thanks. I'm just trying to get a feel for how long a tech will be there so I know how long I'll be off work for. As far as bringing things up to code, I should be ok. My house is only 5 1/2 yrs. old and and the original install is only 4 1/2 yrs old.

Wow. Talk about an easy install. I got a call from the local installer's office about 10:30 saying the tech was on his way. I left work to meet him at home, about 15 minutes away. He had just pulled in the driveway before I did. We took a walk around back and he looked at my current install. I asked him if he was going to swap out the dishes and he said no, that he didn't need to. The two dishes I have were already pointing where they need to be. The only thing he did was add a ground wire and replace the receiver. Had I known he wasn't going to swap out the dishes, I could've requested them to just send me the new receiver. Oh well, it got me away from work for a bit. = )

I do have a few questions though.

1. Other than using the broadband connection to replace the phone line, is there any other reason I may want to connect it to my router?

2. What is the Dish 1000? I thought that dish was needed for HD.

3. Will older shows that weren't originally recorded in HD still show in HD?

4. I don't have my local ABC station in HD. The installer mentioned something about there being a contract dispute between Dish and ABC. Whatever the reason, I hope it's resolved before Lost starts again in January.

Thanks for all of your help.

#1) Yes, you would use your Ethernet connection to download On Demand content from DishOnline.

#2) I have no idea what your setup is. I will defer to others.

#3) No, they will be upconverted. Hopefully, they will have black bars on the side unless the folks at TBS, Food Network, TNT, Cartoon Network, HGTV, A&E, History, Biography, Lifetime or Lifetime Movie Network broadcasts them. Then they will still be faded upconverted but with distorted faces and bodies in a weird thing called stretch-o-vision.

#4) Use an antenna and watch the CW and PBS in less compressed HD as well rather than just watching the big 4. ;)

Wow. Thanks for the quick response.

1. Cool. Is On Demand ready now or a few months from now?

2. Two Dish 500's connected to a DP34 switch with a 722 and a 322 connected to them.

3. Yep, that's exactly how they look.

4. I know, but I'm still curious about this.

#1) OnDemand from Dish which costs $ just like Pay Per View is ready now. Dish Online is slightly different. It involves OnDemand movies as well as TV shows. Much of it is free unlike traditional OnDemand/PPV which usually involves a cost.

#2) Last year they yanked my 500 and gave me a 1000.2. If the two 500's work, then cool.

#3) Cool.

#4) Can't really comment on your local ABC situation. I prefer OTA from the antenna (I use set-top antenna/rabbit ears on each receiver) as it provides a backup against rain fade, gives me the subchannels and other digital stations (PBS, CW, Univision, etc.) not provided by Dish and provides better PQ than the HD-lite locals provided by Dish.

Two dishes is actually a better install for many people. One of the dishes points at 110, and 119 and the other at 61.5 or 129 depending on line of sight and where your HD locals are placed. The 1000.2 and 1000.4 dishes get either 110, 119, and 129 (western arc) or 61.5, 72.5, and 77 (eastern arc). The 129 signal is problematic for some locations with the 1000.2 dish, so they end up with two dishes anyway in order to get a better signal from 129.

New customer question

Hi all. I am a new customer too. Only had Dish NW for about a month. First of all, let me just start by saying i've been reading and searching these forums all night, and i came across this thread, and this one looked like the best one to post my "new customer" questions. I have many questions, but i won't post them all in the first post. If there's a better thread for these posts let me know.

My first question is, what is the point of having alot of the stations on two different channels. For instance, HBOZ HD is on 308 and 9452. SCIFI HD is on 122 and 9432. And many, many others. I know there's a difference but the installer was clueless. I'm sure the answer is obvious but I've not been able to see it.

Also, the ethernet connection mentioned earlier in this post has been said to be for a "broadband" connection. At my house, Im hooked up to DSL. Will this work too, or does it have to be cable broadband. If so, how can I get broadband without having cable? (I cancelled Comcast specifically to come to DN because I couldn't stand them anymore and they're the only cable provider available in NW Louisiana).

First question the lower channel number is the map down to put th HD channel next to the SD channel in the guide. This can be turned off if you want.

DSL will work fine.

Thank you all for your responses. To gdarwin, can you give me the instructions on how to turn this off so the same channel doesn't show up multiple times in the guide. Sometimes I just like to surf the guide to see whats on and it confuses me. (I realize that I can set up a "favorites" guide if that's what you're referring to.)

Also, would this explanation be the same reason that some channels show up THREE times?? such as HDTHR is on 9421, 6206, and 364.

And here's another teaser for anyone reading this post. I am going through my HBO's and STARZ's, and I am noticing that some of these are only on my guide in non-HD version. Is this right? or - should I be getting these in HD, too. Such as, 304 HBO2W, and 355 SBLCK. I was under the impression all premium channels were supposed to be in HD.

No, that's correct.

Though I don't know the "official" reason why those channels aren't also in HD.

gdarwin, i found it, however, when i click on it, i get a warning message that says "you will lose your timers, are you sure, YES or NO?" I clicked NO because i wanted to check with you and see what that means. I'll lose all my timers?

Best way to explain is to go to timers section of your user guide. If you have not setup any timers select yes. If you have timers set up make note of what they are and then reset them after turning mapdown off.

Odd issue with 1000.2 alignment

Why can't I get "Eastern Arc" service Now?
