New Directv HR54 and H44 models

What happens to a lot of folks like me who only have a SWM-8? I guess there will be some upgrades in that respect.

Whats that big black part on the top right of the board in the one pic? Is that the access card slot?

Instead of this whole transponder mess... why not go with FBC (Full band capture) tuning. Pull in the entire spectrum. Your seeing these chipsets in newer 16+ channel cable modems. Maybe put the FBC chipset in the LNB and just send the receivers what they ask for over DECA. Sort of like an in home "Switched Digital Video" system. Then maybe the whole concept of "tuners" is a moot point and instead your looking at DECA bandwidth in the home as the limiting factor of how many clients / recordings can occur at once.

Your swm-8 would be fine with an HR54, but you would only have 1 tuner free for a possible HD receiver, I am sure the new RDBS lnb will have at least 13 swm channels, most likely many more.

That's sort of how SWM works. Each tuner asks the LNB to send just the channel it needs. It actually delivers the whole transponder but that's just an implementation issue.
Regardless of how you do it, you would still need "tuners" somewhere,

Word on the street is that they have 22 SWM channels. I think they are planning on the day that 4k becomes as big as HD. What I really like about it is that if they do end up giving us more tuners (yes please) that only expands the capability between recording content and being able to watch live content. I can name lots of times that my genie has been full with stuff recording and the kids are complaining that they cant watch live tv. I really wish I had 10 tuners. and with 4k I can see the need for more, unless we get to a point where 4k only uses 1 transponder like HD.

Also while everything so far on the HR54 has been on the Humax model(-500), here is the first public documentation of the HR54-700 model manufactured by Pace, besides RedH firmware monitor which is showing both versions.

I would submit to this however, I'm just gonna throw this out there. 4 jobs today, 3 1 box new installs. All 3 were HMC's, all was provided...bingo! Free of charge. So apparently indi is just a special market...or it's just if you call in you get an HMC free instead of using the website. Not sure how, I'm not arguing you're proof, I'm just saying. I install it everyday and see 1 box HMC's daily that was given to the customer for free

Haters going to hate and they would rather bash Scott than talk about the technology, Ok aint nobody have time for that! They are so far out of the loop when it comes to what DirecTV is doing that they can hardly be called reliable for their information any more. What's sad is Scotts information has been very solid and reliable over the past three years and has just as many DirecTV inside contacts as he does with Dish. These guys whine about how he's sold out to dish when he hasn't. I know for a fact that Scott wants to report on all things satellite, and with that he has gained a strong trust with multiple people inside Directv over many different departments. I am amazed at how much Scott knows and how these guys continue to downplay claiming he doesn't have an HR54 or even know anyone with one. Their comments are laughable as they really have no clue!

Just take a look at my record for last year. EVERY thing I reported was true and I reported it before them.

Where do they think I got these pictures? Pulled them out of my butt? Drew them?

They can bitch, whine and cry like little girls all they want but in reality they are upset that I am getting and reporting the info and they are not.

I wonder what they will do if I go to Revolution in July and report from there.

They can keep on crying... I will keep my ear to the ground and will keep reporting what I am hearing because that is what I do. I am not a DISH guy I am not a DIRECTV guy... I am a Satellite Guy.

Good first look with pictures of the unit and the hard drive, for a non-dvr home it is a nice solution as it has the upgradeability and powers clients without DVR.

Seems to me two things missing - wifi (if you add a hard drive you need internet for on demand, and a non-dvr home likely doesn't have a cinema kit installed). Unless I missed it, there isn't built-in wifi like on the HR44.

Second, why not make the hard drive attachable to the H44, adding some slot groves to the cover and to the hard drive would allow it to attach, and with the H44 being designed to be wall mountable it would make sense to have an option beyond velcro.

It looks like you can connect an external HDD to give it DVR capabilities. Hopefully we'll have our own first look shortly.
