Regardless of the encryption, it's not unreasonable to assume the hard drive will be larger, perhaps 2T. All of the proceeding models have had increasingly larger storage capacity.

I think you mean compression not encryption. They may eventually go to H.265(HVEC) but with current equipment will probably just use H.264 for awhile.
Hopefully H.265 is ready so there's not another "interim" solution like back in the day when HD migrated to MPEG4, obsoleting a bunch of receivers. Maybe they will learn their lesson this time around. I'd rather wait a few months to get the product right vs. rush it out the door just it have it obsolete again in a year.
I would speculate faster CPU, H.265 support, built in power inserter, wifi, 2tb, hdmi 2.0 hdcp 2.2, 4k at a minimum. Aren't they working on an RVU 2.0 too? Maybe that would make it in.
I wouldn't be surprised if composite output was removed or moved to that dongle connector like on the H25 either.

Actually ESata is really common, most Best Buy's sell them and the kit to connect them to our system. I see a lot of them where I install at, and the H44 is ESata compatible. Also, according to the official P&P, technicians will not carry nor support the drop shipped hard drives, as they are considered customer owned.
Directv 4k uses H.265 HVEC. It's already been tested and works fine. The 4k test channel that was up a few weeks ago was a test of live 4k and it went really well. (Hearsay
) You will need one of the new receivers, or a genie with a TV that can decode H.265 HVEC (any supported 4k set) with RVU compatibility. We may see live 4k be streamed via RVU via any genie. Basically the genie streams the program to the TV and the TV does the decoding versus the genie doing the decoding. (Speculation) Looking at NAB and some announcements about live 4k channels coming this summer from Intelsat and among others, Directv appears to be ready to offer it when it becomes available. It's just a matter of time before Directv announces. The only upgrade that people may need besides any receivers would be new LNB's with reverse band capability. 4K is here and coming way quicker than anyone thought... Just like I said 6 months ago. LOL In a few years ATSC 3.0 will be coming on the broadcast side and we will see sub 1000 dollar 4k sets, making 4k an accepted standard. What's really nice about ATSC 3.0 is the standard was written for compression changes so as H.265 becomes the way of what MPEG 2 is now, what ever standard of compression is king then, the standard adopts with that and you wont see the industry stuck on one compression method. The industry is trying to push the TV manufactures a way of upgrading sets so as standards change users can upgrade their sets with the standards.

I agree, you might as well use all 8 tuners available on the swm.
I think the issue becomes how much information can be written to the hard drive at a time.
Of all the things I like the HR54 to have over the current Genies -- a super large CPU that is able to handle the bloated badly written software DirecTV keeps updating with junk features.
I could see a read/write limit to the hard drives.
Typically hd is 15mb/sec. If you run 8 recording and let's say 4 playback that's 12 streams.

I would keep the Score Guide IF they make it the way it use to be ...
Since they changed the format awhile back, I rarely ever use it ... takes way to long to load and to hard to find what your looking for compared to the old way.
Also keep Pandora ... the rest I never have used much of.
What's the old way Scoreguide used to be? I've only had DirecTV since February so everything is new to me.
It didn't take 2 minutes to load, it didn't have upcoming games, current games and all the other garbage it does now.
I suppose it's more advanced now because it covers more sports I think and things that hardly no one looks at.
I'm happy they have NASCAR on there but it's a joke that the Championship standings are arranged in alphabetical order (driver's last names) instead of by points position. It's a big mess.
i would be happy with 200 Series Manager , never understood why the Series Manager couldn't be just upgrade by a software update
Some notes on the H44 Genie Lite shared with us from some tech training:
H44 cannot be installed in a home with a Genie or Genie Lite (maintaining the one-Genie rule).
The internal power inserter is a PI-21, and will power a SWiM LNB. An external swim 8 or 16 will still require a separate PI-29.
A home that has a PI-21 and is upgraded to a Genie Lite, the tech is asked to remove the PI from service.
Interestingly, if a tech visit finds the PI in a H44 failing (during troubleshooting), they area advised to add a PI-21 back to service (not just replace the receiver so to speak).
An install that has a PI-21 and the H44 both in place will not cause damage to any of the DirecTV components.
Techs do not install, service, or replace external hard drives. They are customer owned and sold/drop-shipped by Directv only.
