Netflix comes to the Hopper with Sling

I have had a Roku 3 since it came out and it would be hard pressed for any device to work as well as it does. Even my smart tv is much slower loading Netflix were the Roku is instantaneous. Nice to see it come to DISH.

Ive got one as well, but I find it as my last go to option. I use my smart tv simply because of 4k capabilities, but generally I use the xbox one for most of my streaming. Its on, its fast, and it does a good job.

Lately my fire tv stick has been used more than my roku 3. Sure, it doesnt have as many channels, and is missing vudu (boo), but i find it to be as fast as the roku, and i like the interface.

I do use the roku more than the chromecast, which is in a drawer somewhere.

Let me be the first to pee in the pool - recent updates have slowed down the Joeys and the prospect of a streaming app like Netflix makes me wonder if this will bog down the Joeys even more so (when it arrives for Joeys).

I *hope* they get this integrated without slowing down the Joey functionality and that this not become a PR mess, especially when this is such a positive step for Dish. Please please please get this right, Dish.

Spread among a few tvs, although the main one I use in the bedroom has 5 streaming options counting the built in features. Well six now with the hopper.

Ive been meaning to move some of them to our camp and office.

I have top 120 with OUT the rsn and the Netflix app works fine on my Hopper with sling. So I guess it doesn't matter what pack you have in regards to the app working . I don't know what DISH gets out of it except one step closer to having every thing in one box.

we do not know what else is coming down the pipe from dish you never know it could be more apps,4k,new hd channels who know until then.

DISH expects the app to rollout to Joey, Super Joey and Wireless Joey clients

Because the CPU in the Hopper with Sling supports the secure encoding Netflix uses... which I believe (and could be wrong) is HVEC)

And when they say just "Joey" in the press release, they are no doubt referring to the Joey v2 (the internal hardware-only revision - faster CPU, add'l RAM).

I don't understand all the technology involved in the hopper/joey system. I always assumed that the Hopper did all the processing and the Joey was basically just a way to output HD in another room since the Hopper couldn't do that directly over COAX. I would assume this would work the same way with Netflix. It can't be counting on the Joey hardware itself because Scott already said it would only work on Joeys paired to a HWS.

With Netflix, I see 3 prices. Do you get HD for $7.99 or is their a HD fee, since I see below the 11.99, the post says HD plans available.

I have been a Netflix streaming customer since 2008. This is the first I have heard of them offering separate plans. I am grandfathered into their old $7.99 plan. This used to be their only option so I didn't know about this new stuff. I know that my $7.99 grandfathered plan gets me HD. I'm not sure how many streams I am allowed at once but I know that I have had at least 3 going at the same time with no issues.

For new customers it looks like $7.99 gets you SD only and you can only be watching 1 stream at a time.

$8.99 gets you HD access and 2 people can be watching streams at the same time.

$11.99 gives you access to their 4K content and 4 people can be watching streams at the same time.

Keep in mind that you can sign into your Netflix account on many more devices than that. The only restriction is on how many can be actively watching something at the same time. This was put in place to limit how many people were sharing their Netflix account with friends and family.

In my case my parents are sharing my plan at their house and my sister shares it at hers as well. We have separate profiles so we each get our own queues and recomendations. It's really a pretty nice setup. If I was a new customer it looks like I would have to go to the premium $11.99 plan to get the same thing.

As for as satellite reception/distribution, yes, I believe the Hopper does all of the work. In the case of the Netflix app and other apps, it appears that the 'host' it's running on is doing the processing work.

When the press release just says "Joey", I'll bet there's fine-print that they left off (it's a press release, not a tech sheet). I'm not sure of the timeframe of releases, but didn't the Hopper w/Sling and a "new" Joey get released at the same time ? In that case, most people probably ended up with that newer Joey. Now, if I upgraded my Hopper to a Hopper w/Sling but kept my current Joey, something tells me I won't see the Netflix app on the Joey...

Lots of posters here claimed this would "never happen" because of competition with their Blockbuster pack. Clearly, those people were WRONG. But the question about hurting the Blockbuster sub numbers is a valid one. Netflix must be chipping in enough to ease the sting.

In my opinion Netflix is much better than the BB@home streaming options. You aren't going to find brand new movies on either service but Netflix has a much better selection than any of the premium movie channels do. Not only that but it's cheaper. Netflix also has a deal with EPIX. Everything EPIX gets shows up on Netflix a couple months later.

TV seasons are where Netflix really shines though. It seems like just about everything comes to Netflix about a year after it airs, right before the new season starts. Netflix doesn't get HBO content or many series from the other premium networks but for most general cable and network shows the selection is pretty good.

I understand your point as it relates to hardware capability, but that would be a nightmare for Dish to swap out old Joeys for new for those customers who want Netflix Joeys. I have had a few conversations with techs who had no idea they could give me a V2 Joey. This is virtually unknown for the field guys I have talked to.

This can't be the case. Gotta be all HWS customers with existing Joey hardware or its gonna be a mess.
