Neighbor installing 3 Satellite DISHES?!?..

My neighbor installed(or had installed) a Direct TV satellite a week or so ago. Then just a few days ago, I see a new Direct TV satellite right next to the other one... then today I see him installing another satellite!! This one says Dish Network on it. So I decide to go see just what the heck he is doing..
I ask him why he is installing a 3rd satellite and he says because he wants to have a 3 TV system... before I could tell him that I dont think he needs to be adding all these satellites to do that... he runs off into his house as he was busy installing and setting things up. I wait around for a while outside waiting for him to come back. Checking out some devices he has hooked up to the satellites. I decided to take a few pictures of these devices as well as the satellite. I'll post the links to these pics below.

Does anyone know if what he is doing is necessary? I mean I dont know how Direct TV works, but I just had a Dish Network satellite installed 2 weeks ago with a dual LNB going to a DVR 522 giving me 2 tuners. Just two nights ago I had the installers come back and switch out the dual LNB for a quad LNB and run a few more coax lines to a new 322. Giving me a 4 TV/tuner system. They could have just installed a DP34 but they didnt know what that was...

Anyways, I just thought this was kind of funny. That I have ONE dish and yet I have a 4-TV system. Whereas my neighbor has 3 satellites and has a 3-TV system.

Maybe it's a poor man's version of the DirecTV eiptical dish, also know as the "Plus" dish. My neighbor behind me also has three 18" dishes installed for D* but I never seen a multi-switch. I thought that is what he was doing with his three sat. dishes. I can't complain since I using three different dishes for E* (61.5, 110, 119, 148).

Maybe he's getting audio channels with a FTA setup, or ExpressVu with a grey market account, or something completely naughty with magic equipment. And maybe he told you the little story about 3 TVs as a polite alternative to saying "None of your business!"

If I see them correctly, his two D* dishes are both single LNB. It's hard to see if both are pointed at 101, but he may have one at 101 for normal D* and one at 119 for locals (or 110 for HD).

The seperate E* dish makes sense as you can't mix D* and E* on the same switches (without at least some serious work). That third TV would get E* and not the D* channels.

He does have a switch involved, although his wiring is hard to follow. The PanSat 4x1 in picture 3 has LNB1 (Green) and LNB2 (Yellow) populated. It SAYS "Dish" on the green cable, but that doesn't nessisarily mean E*, and from picture 1 it appears that the yellow ended cable (which is white coax in picture 2) leads to the original D* dish. I'll bet that the white (yellow end) cable is 101 (on the KTI dish) and the green end cable is 119 (on the Hughes dish). There is an obvious angle difference in the photo. BTW: Picture 2 also shows the yellow ended wire that feeds the 4x1 not going through the wiring box. I assume they fixed that when the installers wrapped up.

I'm not sure about that big distribution amp, or if it is some kind of switch. In picture 2 it looks like a power plug at the bottom, three coaxes used on the right with three more capped off below them and at least two uncapped connectors (in picture 3) above.

I guess if it works for him it works, but that's a lot of wiring for "three TVs".

I hate to say it, but your neighbor is a fricken thief and is stealing DISH Network programming with an illegally Programed Pansat FTA Receiver.

That paticular Disec 4x1 Switch is only specifically used for the Mpeg2 FTA receivers, if your neighbor had a ligitiment setup there would be no need for that type of switch to be installed or the amount of Dishes you see on his home.

More than likely he has probably got a seperate Dish for 119/110 and then the 3rd Dish is so he can steal ExpressVU.

Be sure to ask your neighbor how he is enjoying the 20 Porno channels he is stealing from Bell ExpressVU and DISH Network.

You should really consider calling signal integrity at Dishnetwork!

Although there has been a huge push on the illegal reception with FTA, at least give both sides of the FTA story and the guy the benefit of the doubt in his neighbor's eyes: there are TONS of legit FTA programs, analog and digital on both C & Ku bands. I use FTA also and I am NOT stealing anything. Some people choose to use multiple dishes they already have laying around that do not want to pay additonal money for a motorized mini-dish or mover. I use my old BUD with my FTA as well as the old 4DTV and C/Ku setup. I wouldn't advise you get a satellite company all in your neighbor's business without knowing 1000%. This does not make for good neighboring.

charper1, I agree completely with everything you say.

However, those are not 30" (or larger) dishes which are required to view virtually any legal FTA stuff. Only a very select few things are available in the clear from DBS sats (see here). But I highly doubt he's going through all that trouble for about a dozen legit channels, about 3 of which actually show any real form of programming.

I am not sure about the first dish, as I didnt see it go up. But my wife says she saw him setting up the 2nd dish, and I saw him setting up this 3rd dish..

No, I did not get a chance to explain to him that I think he could just use a multiswitch instead of adding satellites. He was in too much of a hurry to get his system set up to talk to me.

My neihbor is asian, and we dont communicate very well (I cant understand him half the time).

The commonly accepted term used by technicians is "dish". It avoids confusion because we often also talk about the satellites themselves - sometimes using the term "bird" so as to remove "satellite" entirely.

Calling the dish a "satellite" is like tattooing 'newbie' across your forehead.

Besides us dum@$$es have trouble with those mul-ti-syl-a-bal-lic words.
