Good Morning All,
I just wanted to provide an update on this subject, as I have
been viewing the posts for some time now and tried it for myself
recently.
I was successfully able to extract most of my video content from
my VIP622. I used the procedure that most had stated previously:
1) Move 622 near PC (with cover removed) and power up.
2) Run "Ext2 Installable File System for Windows".
3) Unplug SATA cable from DVR and plug in SATA cable from PC
motherboard.
4) Run PVR Explorer Pro.
The only issues I ran into while performing the rip were:
1) The vast majority of the video files weren't recognized properly
by PVR Explorer Pro.
2) Some of the files weren't discovered at all by PVR Explorer Pro.
I was required to play the newly created files and rename them
manually after the rip was completed. This was a small price to pay
(initially) to be able to clear out my 622's HD, but will get more
annoying as more rips are performed.
Almost 20% of the video files weren't discovered by PVR Explorer
Pro. I didn't delete these files after the 622 was reinstalled, in
hopes that I may be able to rediscover these files after the other
files have been deleted.
Items of note:
1) I have a 1m SATA cable running from my mb to the 622 HD. No need
to make things more difficult by adding another interface in the mix.
2) I'm going to try to make this easier to perform by adding a SATA
connector to the front of my PC so I don't have to open it up or have
a cable hanging out the front.
3) I'm also going to have a SATA extension cable and connector
hanging out the back of the 622 so I don't have to crack the cover.
In conclusion, I believe this method is serviceable at the
present time. I truly believe that (as a software developer myself)
the only issue remaining is with PVR Explorer Pro. It is very close
to being an excellent solution for the dishrip community. I didn't
detect any bugs and it seems to be a very robust application. I have
used software in the past that has balked at the thought of creating
a 20GB file. PVR Explorer Pro did not! Since all of my files are mpeg-
2 (even the ones recorded at 1080p), I can't comment on it's
abilities with mpeg-4 files. I believe this is another issue that the
folks in the PVRExplorer group are discussing. My hope is that these
issues will be resolved by the time E* starts broadcasting most of
it's content in mpeg-4. So, until then, I will continue trying to
refine my current method of extraction and pass along any new tidbits
I discover. Good luck and Good ripping.
