Need hookup help. Please save my sanity.

I need help hooking up my system to get the most out of it. My problem is getting things hooked up to get the best sound without degrading the picture. The dvd audio goes through my AV receiver and is fine but I want the option to listen to tv normal (which is the way it is now) or through the AV receiver for surround sound. I prefer not to have the AV receiver on all the time when watching tv using the tv speakers. Can someone please help?

I have the following compenents:

Dish Network receiver 622vip

Yamaha RX-V592 AV Receiver (no hdmi)

Panasonic DMR-Eh75V DVDVCR Recorder

Toshiba 50H81 TV which has 2 S-video inputs and two component inputs (no hdmi)

HDTV Antenna

Run the component video and left/right audio from the 622 directly to the tv and also run the the dvd/vcr component video and left/right audio directly to the tv. Then run the left and right audio outs from the tv to the stereo. You can leave the stereo on one input setting and just change the input on the tv to change sources. Turn on the stereo when you want surround and leave it off when you don't and use the tv speakers.

Here are the directions to get a TV only hook up: Put the Super video cable from the 622 into your TV, take the white and blue audio cables and run it from the 622 to the back of your TV, now you have standard hook up to use your TV only which should be Video One.

To use the surround sound and your audio receiver take the digital audio cable out of the 622 and plug it into your audio receiver . Take the green, blue and red cable and plug it into the back of your TV in the same color jacks,which are usually video 4 or 5, so now when you watch your TV on video 1 you will be hearing the sound from your TV only, when you switch to video 4 or 5, whichever one you plug your cables into, you will have surround sound and HD picture.

His audio receiver does not have digital audio inputs and if he uses the svideo he will not get an hd picture.

This hookup gives me stereo sound but not surround. When I turn the AV receiver on the only way I get sound is if I change the setting from 6 channel to 2 channel. Not sure what else to do.

Switch the stereo to dolby pro logic

The other option would be to run all of the audio through the receiver first then to the TV set. I'm not sure if this will work while the receiver is off as I'm not familiar with Yamaha receivers (prefer my Harman Kardon or a nice Denon) but you could give it a shot:

622 audio out -> Yamaha Video 1 Audio in
Yamaha Video 1 Audio out -> Toshiba TV
DVD Recorder audio out -> yamaha Video 2 Audio in
Yamaha Video 2 Audio out -> Toshiba TV

Come to think of it you will need the receiver on to switch sources so this solution may not be optimal for you. The other reason you might not be getting surround sound is that the TV is not properly passing back the audio for the receiver for it to properly get the matrixed sound of Dolby Pro Logic.

I know that this is outside the scope of your original question but have you considered getting a newer model receiver with Dolby Digital decoding? It makes worlds of difference in terms of sound. I've had personal experience with this myself. Before switching to my Harman Kardon AVR-230 I had an old Sony STR-G3 receiver. Overall not a bad receiver but the difference in sound quality (partially due to the better quality of the H/K) between Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic is pretty darn big. Plus even Dolby Pro Logic II is a nice step up from the old Dolby Pro Logic scheme. Just something that you may want to think about.
