Need Help: RF Remote

I've got a friend who owns older D* equipment. One is a Hughes HIRD E2 model. He'd like to use the RF remote port on the back, but long ago lost all boxes, etc.

I know he needs the RF remote antenna, which can be bought online. The online manual doesn't say whether the original remote will operate with RF.

Does anybody know whether the original remote will work via RF? Has anyone used the HIRD E2 with RF remote (did you need to buy anything)?
