I only have an SD TV at this time (building a new house and waiting for it before I get the HD big screen). I live in a rural area that does not offer cable (between a cotton field and a soybean field). I currently have a 522 DVR that works fine. We have 2 kids and don’t watch anything that is not recorded. The problem is there is one local station (ABC) in our area. That means I can get CBS, NBC, and FOX out of Atlanta, but the FCC says I can’t get another ABC except from my local source (Jackson, TN; not offered by Dish or Direct) so the only way to get it is off of the antenna.
I can pick up local ABC on the antenna, but can not record off of the antenna on the 522. (I can record to the VCR, but that is just silly). Is there any way to record off of the antenna onto the 522? Or is there another DVR that will allow me to connect an antenna and record?
I have seen a lot of talk about the issues surrounding the 9xx dvrs that are about to be obsoleted. My understanding is they will still work for SD signal. Can they record off of the antenna and if so would that be a solution. It looks like I could probably pick one up cheap in about a month.

The only dvr's which can record OTA are 921, 942 and soon to be 622, and they can only record the digital/HD signals and not analog. You are trying to record the analog (not SD). The 921 and 942 will be obsolete as far as the HD channels offered by E*. They will not be obsolete as far as the OTA channels are concerned. The 9xx receivers do have composite outputs so can still work with tv's with composite inputs. You did not say whether you tv has composite (RCA jacks) or just RF, so may or may not work with your current tv. Only thing available to record analog is the vcr.

Check with the station and see if they are also broadcasting a digital signal. Then a 921 or 942 should do the trick. Good luck.

In Jackson TN you should be able to get this ABC digital station: WBBJ-DT channel 7.1 - it should be nearby. The actual frequency they use is 43.

You should also get the following digital stations OTA:
WJKT-DT 16.1 UPN freq: 39 (oh, well, for a few more months, anyway)
WLJT-DT 11.1 PBS freq: 47

With a top notch antenna, you might pull in the Memphis NTSC stations.

If you don't use the DVR for recording, you might want to consider getting a DVD recorder. They can deliver such a better picture than VCRs.

It's not the FCC screwing you, it's the local ABC affiliate - if they won't give you a waiver to get the Atlanta affiliate off of E*.

Instead of fighting it, just tell ABC to go to hell. They have a lot of local affiliates that are real @$$#oles - like the one in Colorado Springs.

KRDO SUCKS
