Ok i have a computer that I cant figure this out in why in the world it is doing this.

First of all let me spec you out..

Hard drive Western Digital 500 Gig Sata
Asus DVD Sata
Lite-on DVD RW Sata
Processor Intel Qad Core Q6600 @ 2.40Ghz 3.0Ghz
4 gigs of OCZ pc2 6400
2 Geforce 8500 GT with 500 megs of onboard video ram in SLI mode
XFX Nforce 680I lt Sli motherboard Intel.
Software Windows Vista Ultimate
all the drivers are up to date.
BIOS is up to date

System settings

FSB 1333mhz
RAM 800Mhz

The issues:

Under windows XP the system is normal and does not do any of this.

In vista, the system radomly locks up and freezes. Happens anywhere after 10 min from boot up to right after the welcome screen.

What has been done: Video cards have been taken out of SLI mode and put in separately to verify that the video cards are working correctly. System freezes with both cards.

Ram has been swapped out and system freezes

Hard drive has been swapped out and still freezes. The only thing I havent done is gone to an IDE hard drive to see if its sata drivers.

The onlything that hasnt been swapped in the system is the CD Rom / DVD drive and the cpu and MB.

What in the world could be causing this random system freeze? Im racked!

Tell me about it Everytime i call microsoft they want 50 bucks for support and say that there is no warrenty on vista because i have OEM software... I hate India and the Phillipeanes. If they spoke and understood english worth a dam, then we might of gotten somewhere.

The only thought I can think of right off hand is the memory. The 680i has automatic overclocking on the memory. Vista has a memory tester, the memory diagnostic tool. Type mem in the search on the start button to see it quick. Reboot and let it run, there is an option to do extensive tests (it starts basic). I had the problem and found out I had to clock down the memory some. I was running Vista x64, and I think it does things differently than XP does in memory management.

Do you get any kind of blue screen like a memory dump or anything before it reboots??

Another Vista problem. No surprise there. My Vista laptop locked up the first night I got it. It never locked up with XP on it.

A few thoughts. Does it start up ok in Safe Mode where it bypasses the drivers? Did you run a compatibility check? If you have the Areo desktop turned on, turn it off and see what happens. Change power settings from balanced to high power. Is your mouse Vista certified? Good luck.

From my experience, memory errors never cause freezes, always reboots.
My guess would be video driver, software incompatible with Vista, IRQ/DMA conflicts. In this order.

Did you do a clean Vista install? What software have you installed?

Diogen.

Vista = ME, also consider that your using an os that hasnt had a service pack yet so theoreticly your an advanced beta tester. Go back to XP until a service pack is released and stick with whats stable for now.

Or here's an idea: don't upgrade to Vista at all... I've heard nothing but complaints from people who've upgraded, while most people (myself included) who get a PC preloaded with it have very few issues, if any.

Seems to me it was the same thing with XP. I know I had an ME machine I upgraded, and had nothing but problems with it.... of course, the fact that I started with ME could have had something to do with that.... from that experience, I think it's completely unfair to compare Vista with ME. My "1st generation" (bought last winter) Vista machine is light years better than my "last generation" (bought a few months before XP came out) ME one ever was.

Take out half of your memory (4 gig to 2 gig) and see if it still locks up. The reason is if your BIOS is trying to re-map the memory due to the memory mapping. You have video taking up 1gig of the memory map, most of the other 1 gig will be used for system devices I/O (input/output) leaving only 2 gig for memory without being remapped above the 4 gig barrier. Just try it and see if it solves the locking up. You really need a 64 bit operating system and 64 bit drivers for all your devices. Also check to see if your motherboard has a Vista BIOS upgrade available. Some XP BIOS's do not work on Vista.
